If anyone was wondering, I reached out to REGINA support to ask about their maintenance free HPE chain vs. Energica.

They wrote back that the 525 HPE chain is compatible. It was only a matter of ordering the correct length.

If I end up with an Energica I will give this a try.
Scottoiler (as I have now on my Yamaha) is the other option (easy but messy).

Thank you very much for taking the time to confirm compatibility with the vendor. I'll definitely look at this chain when it's time to replace mine. Considering my Energica dealer is also a BMW dealer, I would think that I would have an easy time getting one ordered and installed.

I would be interested in knowing what Regina charges for their maintenance-free chain. I bet it is not cheap.

I can't seem to find an Energica specific complete Regina HPE chainkit (contact them?), but a 525 chain or complete chainkit looks like 220-250 Euro from Germany. Surely not cheap, but if it lasts more than a few years it's not too bad... especially compared to the price of the bikes

Well, lubing the chain once a year is an improvement over my regimen of lubing every 250 miles. So there is that. But let's face it. Did anyone really expect a maintenance-free chain, unless it was running in a sealed housing filled with grease? When it comes to advertising there is no limit to the amount of BS that can be applied to a new product.

Mailed Regina back and got this speedy reply…

Dear Mr. Morgensen,
 
the High-Performance Endurance chain does not require the periodical restoration of the lubricant between the bushings and the rollers (likely every 1.000 km).
 
A slight lubrication is however needed to guarantee chain best aesthetics and performances only in case of removal of the original lubrication (motorcycle washing or ride with presence of water, salt or dust), to protect steel plates against surface oxidation.
Such light lubrication is also suggested once per year, before storing the bike prior to the winter season, to avoid Z-Rings to drying out.
 
Products and procedure for lubrication are the same as the standard chain (see Regina website).

Is there any difference between that Regina chain and the chain that came stock with my Kaw 650 Verses?  The Kaw uses a "sealed chain" which means it is greased permanently under those seals.

Pretty sure it's the surface that should be special with the "maintenance free" Regina chain?

This coating reduces power loss and increases efficiency. What's more, the Regina *HPE* chain requires no cleaning or lubrication. So you won't have to get your hands dirty, and it's also better for the environment. But the best thing about the maintenance-free *HPE*is that it's just as durable as a well maintained standard O-ring chain. What's also good is that no specially coated sprockets are required.

"Requires no cleaning or lubrication"... Weeeeell it's less lubrication that others... if you NEVER get caught in the rain

When it comes to advertising there is no limit to the amount of BS that can be applied to a new product. 

When it comes to just about anything. The entire world runs on BS. But I look at the bright side, it's the one resource we will never run out of. It's everywhere.


But this reminds me of a buddy who told me that the Harley Hog club will always tow for free  to the nearest Harley dealer.


So I check into it and read the fine print.  They will tow to  the "Nearest Harley dealer"  and the fine print says  "within 25 miles".


My AAA Premier will tow my Harley 200 miles for no extra charge and that  includes any of my vehicles. The only fine print there is only "once per year" which is more reasonable. I used that two years ago when my RV was stuck in Turlock, CA when the fuel pump (inside a 70 gallon gas tank) crapped out.
