14-50R or 6-50R?

Hey folks,

I'm waiting on my Ribelle to arrive (hopefully this month, we'll see) and the dealer is asking me what kind of charger I want. I think it's got to be either a 6-50R or a 14-50R. What's the difference?

Perhaps I should have been more specific - what are the benefits or drawbacks of each?

It probably depends upon Where you are and what if any 240 Volt receptacles you presently have.
I believe that the 14-50 is the newer style. It can handle 50 amps. The other, I believe only goes to
30 amps. The "R" is for receptacle "P" is for plug. If you have something there already and don't
wish to upgrade, tell them to send you what matches what you have. I had the old style but updated to
the 14-50 just because. You won't be able to pull 50 amps ( 40 actually, 80% of 50 ) unless you have
breakers and wiring to match.

Ok, thanks. Right now I don't have any 220 in the garage, but once I get the bike I'll probably have an electrician run a new 220 outlet. The house I'm in (renting, but the landlord will likely let me put in a 220 outlet) is less than ten years old, so the wiring should be new/good.

I would go with the 14-50R. It's probably the most commonly used EV outlet in most garages in the USA.

I have a NEMA 6-60 in my garage that I charge my Tesla and Ribelle from. The NEMA 6-50 is a three prong plug and the NEMA 14-50 has four prongs. Both are for 50 Amp service. On the 6-50 you have two prongs that each deliver 110 volts and the third prong is the ground. On the 14-50 you have two prongs that deliver 110 volts, third prong is a ground and the fourth prong is a neutral. You can easily buy adapters to go from a 6-50 to a 14-50 as well as from 14-50 to 6-50. There may be benefits to having the neutral prong on the 14-50 but I don't know what they are.

In case you need the 120 VAC as well. For an example, 240 VAC clothes driers often have a 120 VAC motor but a 240 VAC heater.


And you can get 120 VAC from a 240 VAC 14-50R by using one of these and have four 120 VAC outlets from you 14-50R.


FWIW, I made up some short granny cables so I can plug my Energica into a 14-50R on the road such as here.


My 14-50P (plug) uses NO neutral. I only wired in the two hots and the ground. I did NOT use the pin for the plug, it's not in the plug, so it's a 3-prong 14-50P because I have no use for the neutral.
