Question about SR/S Standard with CHARGE tank.
« on: June 02, 2021, 10:13:13 PM »

Anybody here in the USA have a Zero SR/S Standard Model with the Charge Tank?

I am curious how the 9KW charging works on a 6.6 KW J-1772 charge station.  Will the pilot signal work to reduce the Zero's charge tank load so it will reduce to 6.6 KW and not overload the J-1772 charge station?

I assume it will be the same with the premium model 12KW, but I also don't know if it will automatically reduce to the capacity of the J-1772 station.

I dont have the requested configuration of a standard SR/S or SR/F with charge tank with J1772 but an SR/F premium with charge tank in europe, with the three phase mennekes connector (12 kW charging)

When i set my EVSE to 6A the bike does limit the current to 6A (1.5 kw) just like it should. So it follows the pilot signal.
That leads me to believe that for NA with the J1772 it should do exactly the same.

I'm not entirely familiar with north american voltages but 6.6 kW = 6600 W and if the voltage is 208 Volt the currrent at 6600 W is 32 Amps. At 230 volt 6600W is around 28 amps. So the MBB should limit the chargers not to exceed that current.

hope it helps.

As I understand it, the pilot signal represents the max current the charge station can provide, and the charge station will accept any current lower than or equal to the pilot signal.  So a bike with 9kW charging connected to a station providing a pilot signal of 6.6kW will command its chargers to charge at no more than 30A(220V). If the pilot signal signals a lower current, the bike has a finite amount of time to lower its draw.

It will also try to spread the charge evenly across it's chargers, so a 9kW bike would activate both chargers at less than their rated capacity.

I will be getting the CT installed soon on my standard SR/F. But I think the behavior should be the same as a 12kW capable bike. So if a station is rated at 240v 30A, I'm assuming the pilot signal would represent 7.2kW?

It's a PWM signal that represents current, the bike just accepts the voltage. So it'd be 30A in that scenario. You can see it if you build a serial adapter and issue the chargers command while charging. But yeah, a 12kW or 9kW or whatever bike configuration will charge at either the max rate the station will allow, or the bike says it can handle(whichever is lower).
*some caveats for EU owners, then it gets more complicated due to each charger being on different phases.

Thanks for all the replies. What I expected, but wanted to be sure.

This make me wonder if it makes more sense to buy the standard model SR/S and then add the charge tank and have 9KW max  as long as it still works okay on the countless 6.6 KW J-plugs in this area.

I suppose you are looking at the one in egpowersports (I did consider that before i got a good trade-in value at San Jose BMW) ;)
But yes, i did do some napkin math and i see that to charge 50% of the capacity you spend about 9-10 mins more than you would with a 12kW charging capability and i decided to live with that. Moreover 9kW is also enough to max out 14-50 outlets at 40A and most of the ClipperCreek 40A chargers. The only thing it wont max out are the destination chargers that offer more than 10kW or so of charging capability.
And i decided to live with the 9kW configuration :)

It won't max out these here. 70 amp J-1772.

But it was the standard model in Reno that I was looking at. They seem to have trouble getting in premium models. In fact, I don't think they ever had one.

But I have been thinking about taking a ride tomorrow to EGPS.

BTW, I didn't realize San Jose BMW now carried Zeros.  It's been many  years since I have been in there.

We need more of these 70A chargers everywhere :)

Also why look at Reno? That wont give you the CA rebate of $1,366 if i'm not wrong. That rebate will be a $1366 deduction from the MSRP..

And yes SJ BMW is an official Zero dealership, not sure since when though. But i believe its been atleast a few years.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that little detail. Can you use that rebate more than once?  I recall I got a couple of CA rebates on my Tesla, back in year 2018. IIRC, one of them was a small rebate from PG&E. I got a total of three rebates then, including the 7.5K$ fed tax credit which was  a real 7.5K$ tax credit for me. IIRC, total, they combined lowered the price more than 10K$.

I also recall there was a lot of paperwork involved for those CA rebates.

Oh this one has no paperwork at all. Like i mentioned, the participating dealer will deduct the amount from MSRP and in this case $1366 for a Zero 14.4kWh (screenshot attached). So from our end we dont need to do anything. If the bike has an MSRP of $19,995 it will now be $18,629. Also note that this is not a tax rebate and hence it is claimed directly by the dealer and not by the one purchasing the bike.

As for being able to use this multiple times, i do not think this should be an issue as the dealer claims the rebate and not us..

I was just looking on the web at both EGPS as well as Reno.

They both have a  Blue 2020 Zero SR/S Standard for sale.

EGPS is asking $18.495 new

Eurocycles is asking $16,995 used, but with a whole 192 miles on the odometer! That also gives a break on the dealer fees.

The web says this bike is in Las Vegas, but I think this is the one I was looking at in Reno (same owners and they often trade bikes between shops).

-Don-  Auburn, CA

That is a wrong quote honestly. Zero has factory rebate of $2,000 now and then there is the CA $1366 rebate.
So that bike should be: 19995-2000-1366 = $16629
And remember you can add 10% federal rebate for a new bike next year on top of these promotions (wont get that on a used bike)
If you get the CT you get a 30% federal rebate on that too.

So in the end a new bike right now is a great deal!!

Also, Zero just introduced the cash for carbon on SR/* bikes. Check if that applies too ;)

I did all these calculations and decided on a new bike based on these rebates and promotions.

I have received three CA rebates, as well as three IRS rebates so far. None of them required all that much paperwork, compared with other government funding programs. But every time I would apply for a CA rebate the paperwork did increase. So maybe things are more complicated now. There may have been predictions that we would be going paperless some day, but I am not seeing that trend very clearly right now.  ::)
