Large free storage space in Zero S
« on: April 28, 2021, 05:07:21 PM »

Hey,
I want to show you what I did in order to store 2 TCCargers on my Zero S without carrying any boxes or anything.
Now I am able to put them in whenever I need them. There's even space for all the cables, including the large Type2 Menneckes and everything.
I noticed that the tank is mostly empty, and the existing storage bag is just a small part of the free space.

Therefore, I cut out the plastic pan of the tank, creating a massive storage space. I made a new open box, which is open on top, out of some acryllic glass with a hairdryer/heat gun.

The two little visible cutouts were unfortunately neccessary to get the TCChargers in and out. If you just want the large storage space, you can do it without making those 2 little cutouts of course. I can only recommend this, I have no idea why they didn't do this from the factory. The original bag still fits in and looks just like before.
I still want a lid/cover for when I'm carrying my chargers, we'll see:)
Dual Lock 3M is used to fix the chargers so they don't slide around.

Feel free to ask questions!:)

That box that you built looks to be about the size of my Power Tank.   ;)

This is great! It looks like 3 of these TC HK-J chargers might fit stacked on top of each other in the space where my 2.5 kW charge tank currently sits?

Maybe I could even add a second J-port and a Tesla destination port next to the current J1772 at the top of the existing charge tank plastics. If this is feasible, I’d like to tie 2 x TC chargers to the existing factory J-port, 1 x TC and the Calex on-board charger to the additional J-port, and all 4 chargers to the Tesla port.

I have seen someone trying to put 3 TC HKJ chargers there, but from my experience now, I think it's going to be very hard to do. Even cooling ist a bit issue, already with my setup. I use two pretty special high power fans, not normal PC fans. I don't even use the chargers while in the bike, I take them out.
But fitting 2 is no problem:)

Extending the tank storage is already a nice idea i think.
Is there a lot of space there?

This is similar to how Brandon used to make the diginow v2 superchargers before we switched to the pans. Take out one of the sets of fins and then mount high powered fans on one end; run those to the 12v lines on the charger units. From there we used the same system to lock it in place as the Power Tank: a right-angled piece of aluminum with holes on each end bolted to 2 j-hooks that lock into the frame. Zero already drills holes in place because that's how they secure the Power Tank.

Looks like a 13 so no Power tank option.

Nice solution.  Hollywood Electrics had carbon fiber tank lids but it looks like they sold out.

Maybe fashion one out of kydex?

Hey victor, yes there's lots of space, definitely worth it!:)

@MVetter good, I think that's who I saw for 3 there. I put the two chargers facing each other with the cooling radiators, and 2 high power fans. Must be very high power though. I use fans from RC cars.

New2Elec, thanks so much for the link! I think I'll contact them and ask if they can make me one:) it looks exactly like what I want.
Otherwise I'll make one with some thermoplastic or carbon fibre

How long does it take to remove the storage tank and take out the chargers? Do you have to bring tools with you, or did you add some kind of quick release mechanism?

@flynnstig82r

Hey,
it takes about 10 seconds to take the chargers out or put them in. They're fixed with velcro (3M Dual Lock).
What exactly do you mean by remove the storage tank?

My plan, such as it is, is to make some compartments reachable from the front wings to hold the toolkit, maybe first aid kit, and definitely the j1772, which would free up the tank zipper space without giving too much water ingress.

Maybe I misunderstood the pics, but it looked like the chargers were below the storage tank, so you would have to remove it first to access them?

Hey Gains,
this is very cool! Exactly what I did, just much cleaner!
The difference is that you have a properly sealed box again, with less space, while I have a open box with potential to loose stuff, but a lot more room for things like cables.

@flynnstig82r Ah yes. The chargers only fit with the original storage bag removed. So I have to choose what I want to carry, storage zipper bag or my chargers.

@Crissa that should be possible, maybe insert some plastic tubes from the front as storage space in the wings. They're hollow, as you probably know. Although not too much space in there;)

(snip YouTube link)
Can you fit a full-face helmet in there or is the opening still too small?
