Loaded RAM Mounts
« on: March 22, 2021, 05:26:25 AM »

Has anybody ever tried to use RAM Mounts to mount anything of significant weight? The most I've ever mounted with one is a cell phone or gps.

On my Zero FXS I'm considering using two, or four, sets of claw clamps and socket arm plates to mount my external charger to the back passenger grab bars. Each mount is rated for 3-4 lbs. That's why I think I'd need 4 to safely support the weight of my charger.

Here are the parts. I'd flip the top socket arm upside down and bolt it to the bottom of my charger mounting plate. Then I'd be able to easily clamp it all on to the passenger grab bars.

I'd like to have an easy way to mount the charger above the passenger seat quickly, and still be able to easily remove it for the 90% of my riding where I don't need it. Yes, I've considered using my trunk, but I want to continue to use that for all the normal things I use my trunk for. Additionally I'd like to keep the heavy charger closer to the front of the tail section.

My current method of mounting the charger is to just bungee cord the tool bag it is in to the back seat. But bungee cords are kinda annoying to get things tight and prevent them from moving around.

I think it will probably be fine. I would imagine the weight rating is how much a single ball joint can support before it loses grip and pivots under the weight, but as you're using 4 (3 would also work) with a single ball joint there's no way for it to pivot so at that point it just needs to hold on and not let go of the ball entirely.

If the grab handles are round something like this would give a more secure grip (they come in multiple sizes)

And if you're concerned about theft you can replace the knob with either of these

I want the clamps so the grab handles are free of balls when the charger is not there.
