Plug config for SR/S
« on: March 12, 2021, 08:21:54 PM »

Hi there. I’m a new  Zero owner. I have not picked up the bike yet. I’m planning on converting my old hot tub circuit for my level two charging station. I didn’t look at the plug when I bought the bike and there seems to be a few different configurations.

Can someone fill me in on what plug I need to buy ?

I have a charging station a few minutes from my house that is free so it’s not a big deal if I don’t get it set up before I get the bike home.

I got a new 2020 Zero SR/S. It’s my first motorcycle 🤪

The answer depends highly upon where you are.

The North American one comes with a port for a level 2 and a level 1 wall cable.  We don't usually need anything else, since cables are usually already on Level 2 places.

Some places don't have Level 2 cables standard on their EVSE (Electric Vehicle Service Equipment aka a charging stand) and the dealer package may or may not include one.

Sorry. I’m in the USA. I went to home depot and realized I wasn’t sure what outlet I need. I’m assuming it’s the same as my dryer outlet???
I guess it depends on how many amps it is? I think the charger is 30?

I probably should just wait until I have the bike here.

There is an accessory cord if you need to charge from a 110 outlet ?

I’m a little confused as to exactly what charger came with my SR/S.
I’m pretty sure it comes with the level two charging accessory. He said it was usually a $600 add on.

Post a photo of it's AC  plug and the specs on the back of the charger box and than I can tell you what you need.

I have my Zero bikes set up to use any AC I can find on the road, including some of the weirdest outlets.

For an example, see this outlet. That's my bike, I am the  only one to ever check in there. Click on "view more" and the last photo to see the weird outlet.

And I can now charge at 8KW on the road with my SR.

Thanks.
I guess I just need to wait till I have it here and then I won’t need help. It definitely needs a 240 outlet so I will just wait and see what the plug looks like.

I already checked out the charging station near my house and has the J1772 end on it.

IMO, the very best charge outlet for a Zero is a plain 240 VAC outlet. Very simple, and  up to 12KW capacity. No pilot signals or current limitations to limit our charging. Nothing to give us any hassles involved.

Such as here.

If it's the same Turbocord that AF1 sells separately then according to the Turbocord site it has a NEMA 6-20P plug, whether it's the dual voltage model or the 240v.

240 volts times 16 amps=3,840 watts.  That must mean it reduces its own current  to 16 amps for a 3,840 watt charge and will not overload.

So  it will only give the 3,840 watt charge to the Premium 6 KW models. Also with the 12 KW models.

Anybody try a 240 VAC plug without  J1772 on a SR/S?  It should work and then give you the full charging capacity, even on 12 KW. Perhaps not considered as safe, but I would think the BMS would take care of that.

A 240v outlet is not necessarily going to give you higher than 1400W charging.  They do come in varieties other than 50a.

Well it's a 20A receptacle so it and the circuit should be rated for that much current (~4800W). If it's not then it should have a 6-15 socket fitted and the Turbocord wouldn't be able to be plugged in, although that would still be more than 1400W so I'm not sure where you're getting that number from.

50 amps for 120 VAC?  Where?  All the outlets for 120 VAC I have seen were rated for 20 amps. And the plugs are usually rated 15 amps or less.

I think there is a general 20% rule for most of this stuff. IOW, stay 20% below the capacity. But I am not an electrician, but that does seem about right for most stuff.

So 120 VAC at 20 amps=2,400 watts. Minus 20%=16 amps. Now 1,920 watts AC input. But make it 15 amps to not go over the Zero plug rating. 120 VAC times 15 amps= 1,800 watts. Minus the charge efficiently, you're now  pretty close to the OBC's 1.3 KW DC output capacity. Explains why some people have an issue with the  Zero AC power cords.  Imagine what 50 amps would do.

Why are you talking about 120V? It's 16A at 240V or 3840W, as you said in a previous post. While the Turbocord does have a dual voltage model (I don't really get how it works when it plugs into a socket that's supposed to be 240V) it's rated for even less with 12A at 120V or 1440W and I would assume that Craig's hot tub circuit is 240V.

I must have been half asleep when I read Crissa's  message! I don't know how I read 120 VAC from Crissa's "240 VAC"!
