Anaheim to Reno race on May 14th
« on: February 16, 2021, 02:38:10 PM »

The SoCal electric group has decided to do an electric Cannonball Run from Anaheim to Reno. Start time is 8am at a predetermined location and end time is whenever you finish on your bike at another predetermined location. Bring your pimped out Zero, Energica, or LiveWire and vie for the championship title! The route is all up to you. If on Facebook here's a link to sign up.

These are the sort of range tests I love to write about.

Will you be in it?

Where will the group meet at when in Reno?  I assume at one of the countless charge stations, but where?

Saturday morning, May 15th, we are meeting at the Reno HD at 9am.  KSU at 10am to go explore.  Possible interest in going out to try and see the Tesla gigafactory and definitely a loop around Lake Tahoe.

If anyone is in the Reno area with an EV, please come out and join us.  Would be great to ride with some locals and have some fun.

I will try to be there, as long as I am not in the middle of an RV trip or something like that. I have done the Tahoe loop many times on both my Zero SR as well as on my Energica. I will be happy to do another. Plenty of places to charge up. Perhaps you should also visit Squaw  Valley and you can charge while you're there.

Which way are you going to Reno? I assume I-80?  Is it really a race?  I can show you more interesting, but slower ways to get to Reno from Auburn, CA, where I also live. I often take Hwy 20, can charge in Grass Valley as well as at Cisco Grove when back on I-80.

The longest stretch with no charge stations is from Truckee to Reno. But that is mostly downhill. Many places to charge in Truckee.  But with 8 or nine bikes all needing J1772 at the same time will be a problem. Perhaps I should take my Energica and then I can use CCS instead of hogging up another J1772. There are more CCS stations than J1772 in that area. What type of bikes will you guys be on?

This is all up the rider. Most, if not all of these bikes will have DC fast charging. I know what route I'd take, if I end up doing this, and it's a rather grueling day with a difficult ending. Still debating.

CCS is the best to have on I-80. Almost every few exits you can find a CCS charger. Now even at the rest stop at Donner Summit, both directions. But there only one. Many in Truckee, which will be much better for a group.

There are some well hidden ones also, such as behind the restaurant here in Colfax.

Based on the one time I tried to get to the Tesla Giafactory, there is nothing to see out there other than a gate and a guard to tell you to go back the way you came.

But if you do go, be sure to bring a Tesla-Tap so you can charge at the ReCharge Restaurant. The last time I was there, the restaurant was closed down but all the many Tesla Destination chargers were on. There is a Chinese place that is open right across the street.

I will take a ride out there before May to make sure they are still left on.  It's a nice ride down USA Parkway to Hwy50, and the Tesla battery factory is only a couple of miles out of the way, but do not expect to be able to  see more than a gate and a guard unless you have special arrangements.

I suspect the *group* will be largely split up within the first 2 hours. It's a race, after all. That being said I do expect pockets of 2 or 3 riders to stick together. Anything more than that and it becomes a station fight. I think you also know that I'm familiar with I-80 having helped Brandon in previous Iron Butt attempts. That's really the part I'm most worried about. The day is winding down, getting cold, and it's a 6000 foot elevation climb. I suspect more than one person will book hotels before the ascent to Tahoe.

So it really is a race. I guess I will have to meet you guys at the HD shop, about three miles south of me.   BTW, that shop has one CCS charger. I was the very first person to use it--on my Energica.

Donner Summit is 7,240 feet above Sacramento. Can even be closed in May because of snow, but somewhat unlikely. But I have even seen it closed in mid June because of snow around  15 years ago.

How many are expected to be at the Reno HD on May 15?

I will be one of them. With the new charge station at Silver Springs, NV quite a nice ride can be done in NV even on low range electric bikes. I have done USA ParkWay (Near Tesla battery plant)  to Lake Lahontan at Silver Springs to Carson City to Genoa on my Zero DS 7.2 (battery was replaced under warranty and got a 7.2 KWH). From Genoa, can even go to the J-1772 charge station in Markleeville, CA.

To make this trip, J-1772, Tesla-Tap and a 14-50P will be needed. Tesla-Tap for USA Parkway, 14-50p for Genoa.

But Lake Tahoe is a better ride for those who have never been around it. CCS and J-1772 and Tesla Destination stations  are common around Tahoe.  I have been everywhere, if you feel you need a guide.

I would suggest taking Mt. Rose highway to Lake Tahoe. It will be cold up there, around 8,911 feet elevation at the summit.

How long will you all be in the Reno area?

https://www.tesla.com/gigafactory

There's no mention of tours there, but they do say contact info is gigafactory@tesla.com

You might need an actual Tesla owner to be in the group, but I'm sure there are several.

Yes, that was what happened to the group of bikes I was in. We all had to turn around, where there was no pavement, to get to the other side of the divided road.  This was many years ago, so things could have changed.

However, it is a nice ride down USA Parkway to Silver Springs (near Lake Lahontan) to Carson City. All three of those places have places to charge, but at USA Parkway, it is only Tesla Destination stations. J1772 and CCS at the other two--but not at the same place in CC.

Tahoe is a great ride, many places to charge with either CCS, Tesla Destination  or J-1772. But you probably want to avoid weekends as the traffic can be bad in some areas.  OTOH, that means better range on electrics.  You also probably  want to visit Squaw Valley, and they have J-1772 there.
