2016 Zero SR No display No lights No power
« on: December 13, 2020, 04:19:34 AM »

Bike is completely dead.  No dashboard display, no lights, no power.  Could be caused by water, since it happened after washing the bike.  Initially no lights on BMS LEDs.  Did software and hardware reset.  #4 LED now flashing green every few seconds, so all good.
Checked 12V fuses - all ok.  Checked Low Power B+ fuse and it was blown.  Replaced fuse and it blew as well.  Any help diagnosing what is causing problem would be greatly appreciated!

Well, you'd look (which the fuse is out) for the long on the B+ circuit with a continuity tester.

That should let you isolate which on that leg is stuck conducting.

Thanks!  Are there schematic diagrams available to help trace the circuit?

Not that I know of; they've changed their circuits a few times from '13 on.

Low Power B+ fuse blowing is often caused by a bad DCDC. Did the headlight turn on before the fuse blew again? My first step with these is usually to disconnect the dcdc, replace the fuse, and see if the bike powers up normally. If it doesn't, I've seen the dcdc damage BMSes and MBBs. Usually better this happens under warranty, because replacing all these parts adds up.

Zero has worked with me on the cost before(I'm a dealer). New DCDC is a few hundred, MBB/BMS is usually about 600-800 each. Plus labor.

PS. Disconnecting the DCDC on the older bikes is a pain, its in the center of the bike.

Good luck!

No lights.  B+ fuse blows even with the key in the off position. I can hear it pop as soon as it's plugged in.

If the fuse popped, why would you pop a third one?  You know something is conducting that shouldn't be...

Try referring to the 2016 FX schematics here: https://zeromanual.com/wiki/XMX_Platform/Schematic
I believe the SR should be very similar.

Thanks for the help.  Decided I'm probably not up to the challenge of digging through the maze of wiring to diagnose problem.
Probably better off trailering bike to nearest Zero dealership and let them figure out what's going on.

My bike is at the dealer right now for the same thing. I love the bike, so I wanted to take care of it. It seems even though the manual says you can wash it - YOU CAN'T. I rinsed the soap off with a slow and lazy stream of water and killed it. I'm really upset about this. May end up in court if it costs a fortune to make it run again. And let it be known, you must remove any and all aftermarket electrical add on's or the dealer won't even diagnose the issue. Not just disconnect, REMOVE. The only saving grace - I will rewire my add on's better the second time. It will never see running water again.

My bike just sat out in a storm because the tent blew off.  While charging.

It was fine.

'slow and lazy stream' huh?

I have always carefully washed the three Zeros that I have owned over the past 11 years with a garden hose and have never had a problem. One thing that I do is to blow dry the bike after washing with a leaf blower and then ride it around the neighborhood for a couple of miles to thoroughly dry it off and make sure that the brake calipers are completely dry, also.

No idea if this is the case for you, but I have seen some terrible DIY splicing jobs fail under heavy weather or washing. Wire nuts, poorly soldered joints, etc. Building a good harness is a skill most people don't have.  Often this kills the DCDC which can kill the MBB and BMS. Very expensive to fix, and this almost always voids Zero warranty. Probably looking at 1.5k in parts and 500-1kish in labor.

Thankfully they've nearly eliminated this in the newer platform by including accessory plugs with common connectors in the harness.

Dealers often require removal of third party accessories, as they can change wiring and lead to shock hazards. Again, nothing abnormal. I require that as well.
