FX permanently remove charger? Why ride around with it?
« on: October 24, 2020, 09:35:30 PM »

I have a question for the experts.

Will the unplugging and removal of a stock on board charger create any operational or charging issues / faults on the FX?

Plug the charger back in when needed and stop riding around with a $760 charger on the front?

whatyathink?

It can be done no problem.

The You Tube channel NewZeroland (Forum member Sam Baker) did it with his SR for weight savings.  It will be an older video.

For your unique use case I'd say go for it.  Your going to be swapping batteries anyway.

For regular use it would be rolling the dice that someone would NEVER find themselves stuck somewhere out of juice.

I'd say be sure to cover up the connecting plugs as tight as possible to keep water off the pins but other then that you should be good.

I assume you'll be using the Delta Q off bike battery charging setup for the FXs
Downloaded PDF pages 19-20 on Zero's webpage under accessories.

If you do, just remember to turn the key on to start charging. Then the key can be removed.

The OBC during charge closes the contactor. With the OBC removed, you have to close it yourself. But the DeltaQ chargers will keep it closed after  the contactor is first  closed by you with the key. Then the key can be removed and charging will continue.

He's doing tours where they swap batteries at the mid point.
I'm talking about the off bike charging offering for the FX batteries.

Experts, perfect!
Actually, I'm talking about using the calax, with the original plugs, to charge the bike then put the calax on a shelf and ride without it.

That can be done, yes.

I would suggest to look at the off bike battery charging option though with all the batteries you will need to charge.
Maybe an option for you down the road a bit.

I have QuiQ's   BUT   they will only charge one modular battery at a time. The Calex will charge two. The QuiQ's will not charge two batteries by using the split adapter in reverse. The charging is working well by having both systems available. The FX plug to the charger is a long tail, this should allow for moving it to somewhere accessible from the outside of the bike. Need a cap for the plug next. Stand by.

A big thanks to the experts.

Simple aluminum rack to hang the charger on the side and away from the battery. The motorcycle is 7 lbs and $750 lighter on the front. Why ride around with it? unless, of course, you need to.
Electrical tape as caps for now, find something that works? Let us know.

Some things to add about the "on-board" as a "off-board" charger,
There are no relays inside the charger, so if you connect the charger to the bike, when the charger and the bike are at different voltages, there will be an in-rush of current to equalize the voltage between the charger's capacitors and the motor controller's capacitors. This can blow the 10A charging fuse (on the rider's right in the triangle between the battery and the motor controller) which is easy to replace once you find it behind the rubber panel.
To lower the risk of blowing a fuse, it is best to make sure the charger is unplugged from the AC input (the wall) and to have the bike keyed off for several minutes before plugging the charger to the bike.

and make friends with a skilled electrician, it sure helps!

Ride On!
