2020 Zero S engine light w/no errors
« on: June 07, 2020, 02:28:22 AM »

Hello all,

So I bought a new 2020 Zero S about six months ago and a few times it has given me this problem where the engine light comes on but it doesn't give me any error codes on the dash. It generally seems to ride fine even when the light is on (maybe a bit slower but hard to tell as I don't ride it hard). However when I pull the logs I definitely see some errors there but don't know what they mean. I have a sample of the logs below where you can see some of the problems. Perhaps someone here knows what these mean. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Melissa

This page in the manual can sometimes help decode errors: https://zeromanual.com/wiki/Gen2/Motor_Controller/CAN_Diagnostics

In your case 0x5000 is a Device Hardware error, 0x5101 is Line Contactor o/c (possibly means over current), 0x45C9 is Motor low voltage, 0x4884 is Sequence fault (no idea what that means), and 0x4981 is a Throttle fault (the latter two faults also identified in the logs). Unfortunately I can't help beyond that but no doubt someone else will be able to tell you more about the rest of the logs.

Thanks that’s definitely a start. Any idea why this is happening? It seems like a lot of errors for a bike that otherwise is riding fine. I worry that it’s just going to suddenly stop working in the middle of a trip given all the errors coming up in the logs or is this number of errors normal? Also the engine light is still on so there is that too. It’s still under warranty so I can take it back to the dealership but I kinda feel like they might not be the best at dealing with Zeroes given that they’re a Triumph place that happens to sell Zeroes as well. Seems it would be nice to have some idea of what is going on if I do take it to them.

Take care,
Melissa

If they're a registered dealer that shows up through the Zero site then I think they should have the training and equipment to figure out what's wrong and work on the bike. With a throttle fault I would get it to them as soon as you can, they may even deem it unsafe to ride and come and collect it from you. It may not be a serious fault but I don't think there's any way to tell, we've had issues before with people getting a throttle that sticks wide open or suddenly stops working completely.

You have to be carful turning the bike and raising the kickstand.  Make sure you are not touching the throttle.  Any movement can cause problems.

Thanks again for the replies. I've actually dealt with the dealership one time earlier for similar issues and they really seemed lost. Asked me to E-mail them the logs and never heard back. Thought this time I would try to know more and see if that helped point them in the right direction. Sounds like I can tell them there are still a lot of faults, not sure why or what is causing them but bike rides fine. At least now I know what the faults mean even if the why remains a mystery.

A few of these you can get just turning the bike off and on real quickly. Faults don't always indicate a problem. I've gotten the last four just from that and having the throttle slightly engaged.

If it rides fine, and the light goes away, I wouldn't worry too much :)
