FXS Windscreen options?
« on: May 17, 2020, 04:11:09 AM »

I saw the big thread on FX/FXS windscreen options but some things have changed since then.  Some of the links in the unofficial manual don't work anymore, and I'm not sure the base recommendation will work for me.

The Zero Cycra handguards take up a considerable amount of real estate space on my handlebar.  My cell phone holder occupies the remaining space on the left side (which I know can be moved...) as the brake fluid reservoir does on the right.  I believe there are some windshield mounts that'll attach to the handlebar clamp with longer top screws.  Is that an option for the FXS?  I could also use a windscreen recommendation.  Not "touring" size, but enough to make a difference.

Thanks.

It should work, even if the clamps aren't the same width apart as on the S/DS you can move the attachment points for the windscreen side to side. The only "downside" is the windscreen is shaped to fit the contours of the headlight and the FX/S obviously has a differently shaped headlight, so it might look a bit funky and you might get a little bit more air going under the screen depending on how you position it.

Any recommendations?  I'd rather not use ones that clamp onto the bars if (IF!) an alternate one exists that will work on the riser.

This is what I have, an MRA made screen.

AF1 have four different options, the last one being the same as what I have.

Thank you, but I meant the mounting to the riser clamp.  Does anyone know what option fits the FXS?

All of those should work, they all use the same mounting system that bolts to the riser clamps.

You mean they have clamps of their own, or replace the screws in the riser?

You remove the front bolts, put some spacers in the holes on the clamps, put the windscreen clamps on top of those (they clamp onto rods attached to the windscreen), and then put longer bolts that are included with the screen through the whole lot. There may be a photo in the unofficial manual that shows how they attach but I found this one too, can't get a photo of mine as it's not fitted at the moment (I'll be refitting it tomorrow but not in the regular way).

The bars attached to my screen have a bend at the end so the clamps are inline with the handlebars, so there's no fore and aft adjustment (other than flipping the clamps so the bolt is in front of the bars) but instead you can raise and lower the screen without affecting the angle.

No problem. A tip for when you fit the screen, cover the spacers in some grease and put some in the hole in the bar clamp as water will collect in there and corrode the spacers. I was surprised how bad mine were, although luckily they're aluminium and not steel.

I Own numbers 2 and 3 from above. I have run #2 on my 2013 FX ( round headlight ) and both on my S and SR.
Presently, I have an even larger Screen that has been modified to fit. It is also raised UP about an inch and a half
above the bars. I took the bike on a nice road trip yesterday. My 2014 S has the stock handlebars pushed as far
forward as they will go. Number 3 above is about 17" high. The one I have on now is about 19" with the rise
above the handlebars. It is also more " pointed " than the stock ones. This screen has given me the best ET and
MPH at the Drag Strip.
On the ride yesterday, I played with different seating positions to see how much effect there was. On one
relatively even section of road, there was a 30 to 30 point difference in energy used from sitting straight up to
hiding behind the screen as much as possible. Number 4 ( the one that you have (?) ) will give the least amount
of assistance. Probably more aesthetics than function.
Anything that mounts the way that they do on the Zero will be inherently weak. I am sure that other options
COULD be mounted if you wished to take the time to modify.

It helps a little when sitting upright, keeping the wind mostly off my torso but not really doing much for my helmet. If I tuck behind it then it's perfect and that's what I do if I need to hop on a high speed road for a short distance (where it will also help with range), I'm not doing long distance riding on the highway with my 7.2.

I've heard a few people say the screens like to move at higher speeds, I know my bike only does 86mph but it was fine at that speed. It makes me wonder if other people bothered to tighten up the screws that clamp the balls at the end of the bars, or tightened them too much and stripped it.

Regarding the unofficial manual, Zero ripped out their accessories showcase website and replaced it with a single page that can't be properly linked into, so I'm both miffed and unsure whether I should replace all the links with AF1 Racing links.

These are all of MRA's universal windscreens, which will generally fit an FX: https://www.twistedthrottle.com/brand/mra-motorcycle-windshields_windshields-universal

I'm not so much worried about the windscreen as I am the mounting hardware.  If someone can show me an equivalent windscreen with the same riser (replacement screws) mount point, I'm all game.  I'm not sure what that mounting hardware is called in a generic sense.  Right now the Zero Commuter screen (my current preference) is $200 and that's a lot for what it is.

Zero's hardware is literally MRA's hardware. You can even buy longer stalks via Twisted Throttle above if it suits you.

If you're concerned about the two-point mounting, owners tend to just tighten up the bolts at the windscreen joint to keep it from wobbling at speed.

I happen to know that if you use a special drill bit (that won't crack plastic!) to make holes in the windscreen higher than stock, that the windscreen will not wobble at high speeds. Basically the center of pressure on the windscreen should be close to the center of the mount, but MRA screens place the mount below the center of pressure.
