Regarding the turbine whine:

Does it bother you?

Only at about 39mph when it gets the loudest. If I'm driving around that speed for a while I become more aware of it, but it never really bothers me. I would prefer it to be quieter but the rest of the features on the bike make me happily overlook that.

Not a bit. IMO, it sounds kinda neat, but a bit strange.

I was out riding it all day today. I never even thought about the noise. But Zeros make less noise.

At lower speeds (below 40-50 mph), I find the sound not so cool, a bit on the loud side indeed. At higher speeds I enjoy the sound, I also see other people turning heads when passing by. Last week I drove in my car behind an 2018 Eva and I really liked the futuristic sound. Evas (old battery) and Egos are noticeably louder than EsseEsse9 and latest Evas. The fairing amplifies the sound.

I can hear the same tones in a Zero FX chain kit or even my spouse's Scrambler (tho its engine usually masks it, at 30 mph right behind it I can hear the whine of the chain).

The Energicas just are missing the over tones that we'd usually hear in their class of road bikes.

Well, the Energica has got to sound better than the dry-clutch Ducati that passed by me earlier today.  If Ducati ever makes an electric motorcycle I wonder if they will give it a dry clutch so that it can make their signature rattle?   ::)

Some people like that sound!

But I don't think it's on the Scramblers at all.

I like the turbine-like whine personally. I can only really hear it if I'm not wearing my earplugs which is usually when I'm just running errands around town. Based on the reactions of pedestrians, I'm glad the Energica is as loud as it is since I'm pretty confident I don't have to worry about pedestrians claiming they couldn't hear me.

I don't mind it - Not too loud with plugs in.   I imagine I am riding one of those speeder bikes from Star Wars.  If one i had blasters equiped to my bike

I like the whine, although its only heard between songs as I wear AirPod pros with noise cancellation, this makes for a very peaceful ride indeed!

Haven’t got my SS9+ yet (but I was told it was built this week :D), during the test ride with a Ribelle the sound was honestly the only thing that made me consider the whole switch-from-Zero-to-Enegrica thingy... well, ended up with the order placed ;).

From what I read, Energica is using a straight toothed reduction gear. Someone from Energica might be able to check if is all it is technically possible to use helical teeth as this would significantly impact the sound. Of cause, this would require a new set of gears to be manufactured along with the loss of all related warranties... but I”m sure that in Modena they had prototypes made during the development and considered both type of gears.
The downside is that the chain drive noise will be more present, which is from my pov not as nice as the turbine-like sound from a straight set of teeth.

Along with the quieter sound, helical gears also include extra reinforcement engineered in, and a loss of torque. As these are born track bikes, the latter is unacceptable.
