Scratch at rear tire (2 months old, 2200km)
« on: March 15, 2020, 10:11:00 PM »

Hi!

Today I noticed a small cut at my rear tire (scratch? what is the correct word?). Can you please take a look at my pictures and tell me if should I be worried about it?

Thanks!

Looks like you hit something sharp.  As it's on the thickest part of the nub and doesn't penetrate the crown of the nub, I wouldn't worry about it.

Tires loose little bits all the time.  It's part of their function.

Thank you Crissa! That's what I thought. I hope they wear fast because I want to try some road tires (or mixed but more road oriented) on this bike :D

Well, if you're hitting sharp stuff like that, should you use road tires? ^-^

But I shouldn't talk, I have road tires on my mountain bike.  If most of my travel is paved or gravel, they're just much smoother/more efficient.

Haha, nice point!

99% of my travel is paved... so I really can't understand how it happened. I think that it was just bad luck, something sharp on the road...
I have been always riding mixed tires (scorpion trails) and I like them more than the dsr stock tires.

However you are right that these tires protect better from this situations :D

A lucky harmless cut.

Usually cars push debris to the side of the road, leaving it clean. Make it a point never to ride in the shoulders of roads, and also be wary of roads near or through construction sites.

Totally true! I grabbed a couple of screws with my previous bike when riding in the shoulder of roads :S

One more assurance that it is a non-issue. I used to run a track tire on my ICE bike and I have 1 mile of dirt road to reach pavement. The shale put on the road would often puncture a tire and ruin it. They are super soft. I would see cuts like this a lot - just an extra tread groove!
