6kW L2 Charging
« on: November 26, 2018, 05:23:21 AM »

L2 charging on Energica's is limited to 3kW which makes for painfully long L2 charging. EVSEadapters has come out with a Portable CCS Combo DC Quick Charger that can charge an Energica at 6 kW. It plugs into a J1772 outlet or any 220 volt outlet and charges at 6kW by converting AC to DC and it plugs into the Energica's by using the CCS port.

I took a short road trip today and compared CCS charging with the 6kW hour EVSEadapters Portable CCS Combo DC Quick Charger.

To go from 16% SOC to 92% SOC on CCS: 30 minutes
To go from 16% SOC to 92% SOC with the Portable CCS Charger: 80 minutes

To add 50% SOC:
CCS: 15 minutes
Portable CCS Charger: 52 minutes

30 minutes of charging:
CCS: 16-92%
Portable CCS charger: 11-39%

You can take any of the times for the Portable CCS Charger and double them to get the time it would take to charge on the 3kW internal Energica L2 charger.

For road trips the Portable CCS Charger would cut in half the time it takes to charge an Energica on L2. The downside is the price and the challenge of securing it to the bike. Have not figured that out yet. For charging at home, no problem.

I believe DigiNow is working on a 6kW or greater solution for Energicas. Give them a shout out if you want to see what they can build you. All non-warranty violating I'm told.

44lb is portable for a car, but not a motorcycle. Good to know these things exist, however. Might need to be standard equipment for a Livewire...

Sorry to revive an old thread but this topic is very interesting to me. Here in Georgia, there's not a whole lot of DCFC stations so having an ability to charge at 6+ kW would make me less of a burden to my ICE bike buddies.

Sklith, The challenge here is coming up with a mount to carry the charger with you. Not sure it is very obvious by the photos but it is a fairly big system and then you have the cables on top of it. A bracket could possibly be designed to do that but there are no easy mounting points. I am sure it could be done, just not an easy task.
