When I got my Zero last fall, I signed up for a California Motorcycle Safety Program.  Its skills test supplants the need for one at the DMV.  I also got my permit and then waited the three months for the course... Which I then failed my skills test.

Today I had my re-test and passed!  They let me do it on my Zero, with the torque and top speed reduced as low as it would go.

So I will soon be a fully official rider and with a safety course under my belt!

Yes, congratulations Crissa.   

For her 18th birthday three years ago I paid for my oldest granddaughter to take the CA M/C safety program course.  She received a perfect score on the written portion, but barely passed the skills test.  In fact, the instructor told her that she needed a lot more practice before going out into public streets on a motorcycle. After that experience, she decided that she wasn't interested in riding a motorcycle, not even her mother's Zero, and is currently sticking to walking and public transportation, after her bicycle got stolen in downtown San Rafael when her bicycle's chain was cut in front of the restaurant where she was having dinner.

She passed and then... hrm.  Ohwell.

There's a three to four month wait for classes in Santa Cruz!  And 30-5p% fail the course.  It's quite frustrating.

Now I have to figure out how to get into an intermediate course... And how long a wait that'll be.

They did a fine job with my daughter.  She just decided that she didn't want to ride a motorcycle.  I am happy with that decision as she has the reaction speed of a sloth, does a lot of daydreaming and not paying attention to what is going on around her.

Congratz on passing the course. Until you can get into an intermediate course, you might want to look into some other training options. I’ve taken a couple of Can Akkaya’s Cornering Day classes after going nearly 20 years since my last training class and found that I had developed a lot of bad habits over 20+ years of street riding.

His classes are on the Little99 go-kart race track in Stockton so you’re almost always in 1st or 2nd gear, very little opportunity to hit 3rd gear unless your bike is geared low. He has a lot of different types of classes for a very reasonable cost (about $140 per class). The cornering day classes are geared towards basic cornering skills but no knee dragging (he offers separate classes for that). He also offers a wheelie class if you have an interest in learning that as well.

He is a bit of a character but if you can keep an open mind and tolerate his gruff personality he has a lot of knowledge to impart.

Did I mentioned he was a professional racer in Europe when he was younger?

I recommend taking the Intermediate class as soon as you can. It's shown to improve survival rate.

I recommend against applying learnings to go faster, use them to go *safer*.
