1.000 km ride attempt with Energica SS9+ upcoming
« on: May 16, 2021, 06:40:23 PM »

Coming weekend I'll join a Belgium club of EV owners in a 1.000 km ride. The route is created by them and shared using facebook. My understanding is that we should be able to join anywhere within that route. So I'll pick a starting point very close to my home.

I do not expect to be able to ride that full distance of 1.000 km for the simple reason that my average speed will likely be around 60 kmh resulting in a 16.67 hour ride time to cover that 1.000 km distance... without charging. And I expect the bike to need a 20 min charge every 100 km distance covered so 10*20 = 200 minutes or 3.34 hours of charging.

I only have 1.000 km experience with this bike of which only a single longer ride so my feeling on that charging might be very off in either direction.

My wife will be looking at our kids all day long so I can start riding at 6:00 clock and get home whenever I want to. Previous weekend the covid-19 evening clock that required me to be home at 22:00 was cancelled. Although I don't expect to be riding beyond that time.

Per usual I'll be filming at every charge stop. A big difference with the 485 km ride I did before is that weather will likely be a bit warmer and I'm alone so I can really pick my stops based on charge time needed (and rest time needed for myself).

On that trip I never went below 30% but always was charging way too long. Temperature was around 10 C, I'm hoping for at least 15 C next weekend. I'm not sure yet if either of those caused my battery to never warm up. Besides being curious how long I can keep riding that is probably my biggest concern reading about others having their plus batteries heat up after 2 to 3 charges.

I'll reply here when I'm recovered from the ride itself :D.

I  had a quick look at the map and realized not all chargers are DC fast chargers :o. And some that are are only open during specific opening hours. So I'll have to make my own route first of all. Was to be expected as this route is made for electric cars, not motorcycles.

Since the official route wasn't created with limiting 3kW AC chargers in mind I gave it a quick go with ABRP rendering this result

direct link https://abetterrouteplanner.com/?plan_uuid=76b88517-77e9-483c-9973-6dd60912fc65

Total numbers aren't looking too bad. This is with an Energica SS9+ configuration starting at 90%, allowing to drain down to 30% and charging up to 90% again. I had to manually add in some stops to overcome a slow section stretching it.

But still this is way too risky to my liking cause if one of those chargers there is taken I won't make it. Instead I'll collect chargers from chargemap, put them in the right order and use that to navigate from charger to charger. Aiming at like 50 km in between so that if one is taken I can simply overshoot that one and go to the next one. And if needed I can even repeat that a few times. Plus I can add in some backup chargers where they are available.

I saw you have some Lidl chargers in your plan. I'd not plan with free stations if I was on a tight schedule. They are usually occupied and more often out of service compared to paid stations.

Valid point, the problem is at the bottom there are almost only Lidl chargers. I've created 2 separate lists now, one with (almost) no Lidl chargers and one with only Lidl chargers ::) So the second list is a free trip but given your remark maybe impossible https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yf7hDXjCVoYB9RCCe4YP2sZqtrWiRuDmg9ZZPX08v48/edit?usp=sharing

This is the "challenging" section. From place > to place = covering distance // with remarks.

Quote
Charlerloi > Wanlin = 82 km // charger on highway
Wanlin > Virton (Lidl) = 88 km // the only one there
Virton > Bastogne = 56 km // might have to skip previous

All the others are within 60 km of each other at max, most are way closer to each other. So I can easily skip one or two if needed.

Only for that section I'm now considering to cover part of that route on the highway. I'll need to go on the highway for the charger in Wanlin anyway so could as well travel that section over highway. Plus that would gain me time. Just toggling highway saves me 3 hours for the first 500 km. Even if I only do a small portion over the highway that will gain me a lot of time... Not 3 hours as I wouldn't be riding 120 kmh but still hours.

It's not a closed loop cause I'm limited to 25 points :'(. But just need to connect those 2 last points. That's what I have for now. At the bottom I'll probably use highways.

Hans - best to you for the 1000km attempt.  15C ambient represents ideal pack test conditions IMO w/ ample headroom for thermal rise / dissipation assessment.  If in your shoes, an IR based temperature sensor would be handy to sample a select spot on the exterior of pack, before / after each charge session.  Could be a PITA given the base challenge so no biggie or it can serve as the motivator to withstand the anticipated fatigue...do it for the science and benefit to the forum's knowledge base.

Just the footage from the trip for now. I'll make a recap later on about why I didn't get to 1.000 km.

Failed 1.000 km ride turned into a 710 km day trip on my Energica SS9+

I forgot where I read about that battery heating issue but indeed charging up fast from 30 to 80% works without heating time after time. Only once I had to stretch it going to 10% and then it heated up showing reduced charge speeds way before 80% was reached.

And these are the numbers in a post in case people prefer reading https://fotoleer.wordpress.com/2021/05/24/how-a-1-000-km-route-turned-into-a-710-km-trip/

Hans, you have the older SS9, correct?  That one has an air chamber passing through the middle and less battery density to build up and hold heat.

It's the newer ones without that channel that are reportedly heating up and reducing the CCS charge rate.

It's the new one. Apparently when not going below 20-30% during charge sessions, you can rapid charge it back to back without heating up and reducing charge speed (at least in current Central European weather conditions).

I have the SS9+ so with the heat build up. For sure when you charge up to 80% coming from 10%. And for sure not when charging from 30% up to 80%. All day long no issues with that last scenario in 15C temp conditions riding both highway and B-roads.

I'll have to check what the exact threshold is, I believe Reini was talking about 25%. I'll check what happens at 20% as soon as I can. I suspect it to be the charging time which was 29min estimated coming from 10% and 20min estimated from 30%. So could be that you don't even have to ride it hard or so and that it is just caused by the time the bike is put on the CCS charger. Also I'd like to know the exact impact on charge rate cause it looked like it would still go to 20kW or around 60A. It went back to normal after riding for like 60 minutes or so.

If it happens at 30% that is 50% of the battery you can use and keep charging at 24 kW (from 30 to 80).
