J1772 vs 'Combo'
« on: September 18, 2019, 01:16:17 AM »

I just bought a J1772 inlet for my Zero, and now as I'm trying to venture out at range I'm finding a new difficulty:  SAE Combo plugs.

They're replacing J1772s at the chargers near one of my destinations with these.  Are they spec'd to J1772?  Will we be able to make a dummy inlet that charges at a the L1-2 rate but accepts the new plug?

So many questions, so few answers.  Google barely knows that they're different plugs and didn't know one goes into the other but not vice versa!

Sorry, but you cannot use a  CCS charger  on a Zero. They do not put out any AC and your adapter will not even fit. You will have to stick with J-1772 with your Zeros.

However, a CCS vehicle WILL accept either, a J1772 AC or CCS fast charge DC.   My 2020 Energica will charge at 3KW from a J1772 or 25 KW on CCS DC.

But above does NOT mean you can use a CCS charge station for level two charging.

That was my question.

Didn't I lead with that?

Which was my question, because compatibility one way does not mean the other.  Charging accessory power and standby power is usually part of the standard, hence the question.  I know they're supposed to have the older plug if they also support the older plug, but many new stations do not.

BTW, I hope you did NOT buy your J1772 adapter from Zero.

These  are a MUCH better deal: See the 2 x C-13 and C-19 photo in the Tucson RV link here. They can be custom made for other connections. Also adapters are available for them.

I use these to charge my Zero SR at 6.4 KW along with two Elcon 2.5K chargers. These J-1772 adapters  have a higher current rating than those from Zero and are MUCH better built.

Yeah!  I bought it from TusconEV.  My order kinda languished for a week without a reply, but once they got moving it got to me quick.

I already used it once!

Yeah, Rush (the main guy at Tucson EV--if not the only guy) was in the hospital for a while, which delayed many orders, including one of mine.  I purchased two of his cables at different times. I just got my 2nd one last week, ordered two months ago. But well worth the wait!
