EVSE cord/Charge adapter for longer trips.
« on: July 13, 2019, 02:51:02 AM »

I want to do some extended riding using various charging solutions.  L2 stations whenever available.  I want to be able to charge from multiple sources like
NEMA 5-15 (12 amps) Household
NEMA 10-30 (24 amps) My dryer outlet
NEMA 14-50 (40 amps) Campgrounds

I strongly prefer a charge adapter that has multiple inputs like the Jesla/Yesla.  If instead it is a dedicated 14-50 adapter, then that means I need to bring along the stock adapter for when only household plugs are available.

A used Jesla is listed for $499.
evseadapters has the Yesla out of stock but listed for $479.

Any other chargers that might meet my needs?

Well, I went with the Jesla with an additional adapter for my old style dryer outlet.  I'll let you know how it works out when it arrives.
I hope to be able to leave my stock charge cord at work so that I do not have to drag it back and forth each day.

Now to start planning a longer range trip.  I am hoping that the Natchez Trace will be doable.

Do you have a Tesla-Tap so you can use Tesla Destination chargers?

Don, I have not.  It does look like it would make my trip planning easier.
Do you have one?  I have not read much about this.  Looking for examples of successful use as well as any reports of failures under certain conditions.

I own two of them, each kept at a different house. They both work fine on my Tesla Wall Connectors, which is really the exact same thing as a Tesla Destination Charger that you sometimes see on the road.

It's important to remember with the Tesla tap to connect it first to the Destination Charger before you connect a J-1772 plug to it (even if unloaded) for almost a full minute. It needs the supply voltage on it for that long or else it will not work at all. If that happens, disconnect for a minute  and start over.

They work very well. I almost never use 120 VAC anywhere on my Zeros. With my Tesla Tap, I can run several  quick chargers as well as the onboard without running any other AC lines. It's very handy.

I'll let you know how it works out when it arrives.
The Jesla was delivered yesterday.
It came with the household plug and the plug for campgrounds (14-50).  I also ordered the 10-30 dryer plug (old style) that matches my dryer outlet.
The stock charger pulls about 10A from my wall outlet and pushes 1.2kW in to the battery.
This charger pulls 25A from my 220 dryer outlet and pushes 5.5kW in to the battery.

I am happy.
I am curious about the estimated time.  As you can see in the pic, it estimated 1:15.  It actually took 1:35.  I know that the charge is not linear and it ramps down at the end.  I guess I just assumed that the estimate would take this into account.
Not complaining, just trying to understand.
Did I mention that I am happy?

I do need to talk to an electrician about installing a 10-30 in my garage The existing outlet is in the shared wall between my laundry room and the garage.

I can see that I also need to clean my display after I wet rides.  :)

I had to pull my bike all the way up to the door so that cord would reach from the laundry room.

Check Amazon for a 3 or four prong dryer extension cord. depending on your needs. They come in various types and lengths, so find what you need that will work for you.

I am planning on splitting the existing line with a second outlet on the garage side of the wall.
We use a gas dryer so both sides will not be in use.
