Sunny Boy Storage 2.5 - an inverter/charger for our Zero's
« on: February 11, 2016, 11:18:25 AM »

SMA have recently announced that they will be bringing a high voltage inverter/charger to market in March 2016 (data sheet attached).

Rather than support the 48V pseudo-standard for residential battery storage their new unit will support the Tesla Powerwall and other HV lithium batteries with voltages between 100-500v.

The units will talk to the battery via CANBUS. This opens the opportunity to using our Zero's 102v nominal 116v max packs in a home energy storage system.

The units will be capable of single and three phase configurations and will be able to provide a battery backup capability (for grid outages) later in 2016. With most residential batteries just under $1,000kWh using your own Zero to power your home during grid outages can be done a lot cheaper than buying/installing a Tesla Powerwall, LG Chem or other storage systems and their associated battery inverters. For those with solar there's also the option to charge your Zero during the day and use it's energy to power the house at night (recognising that will use some of the 3,000 cycles on your Zero before it's capacity is reduced to 80%).

Very neat.

For most of us, our battery packs are likely to deteriorate primarily from calendar aging, not cycle counts.

I thought the Powerwall was higher voltage, though?

Yeh, I doubt I'd get my bike to 3,000 charge cycles too and even if I did it would have plenty of life with 80% capacity left. I ride my SR 2-3 times per week but sometimes it can sit idle for a week or two and having it serve another purpose i.e. energy storage would save me a couple of dollars a day on electricity by using my own solar and useful for power outages which my area seems prone to.

Forget the power wall gals/guys.  The Tesla Model S battery BMS CAN traffic is being decoded.  Salvage MS batteries are the absolute best $/KW-Hr to be had.  We need to do a SunnyBoy to Model S battery project :)

Wow, that is some thread over at Tesla Motors Club.

Ultimate charging geekery.

Does it make sense to try to use Tesla battery packs,
or does it make more sense to take the cells inside
them?

So, could someone explain to me how to hook up your bike with this smart SMA?
Is it just a matter of plugging the bike in a normal outlet in your home?

Things are not that simple, i guess. How does the sma talks with the canbus?
Thanks in advance. I'm now often charging my bike using my household PV system.

Well, getting the contactor to turn on is as simple as turning on the key. Then the battery power is available under your seat. That's the basics. But it could be dangerous. 116v dc can dump power faster and more dangerously than 116v ac.

116v dc can dump power faster and more dangerously than 116v ac.
How did you come up with that? The RMS is exactly the same, but the AC has higher peak voltages, which means more current can be drawn for a while on each cycle.

I just looked it up in a web search, see here.

Even a lot worse than I expected:

"For DC to produce the same effect as AC on the human body, its flow of constant strength must be two to four times that being administered by the AC."

"It’s easier to let go / remove contact with “live” parts in the case of DC than AC."

" while it can be surmised that AC is more dangerous than DC,"

Looks like we both learned a little today. AC at the same voltage and current capacity is a lot more dangerous than DC. I assumed AC would be just a  little more dangerous, but AC is a lot more dangerous than DC.
