Heated grips temperature...
« on: July 18, 2019, 03:03:10 AM »

Anyone else with factory heated grips installed notice that even on the highest setting they don't seem to get very hot. On the cool morning commute, I can only feel them about half the time, the rest of the time I don't notice them. This is a far cry from my Trophy which only has high and low. High on my Triumph is only really useable if the temps drop below 40 otherwise it's too hot. The low setting on my Triumph gets hotter than the high setting on my EsseEsse9.

Is this normal? I'm having the dealer look at it when I drop it off for its initial 600mi check but just wondering if other owners have experienced the same.

A lot of this type of stuff only feels warm when it is very cold. That is because they often use thermistors or whatever to regulate the temperature, so ambient temperature has no real effect and therefore feels hot when cold outside, but like not working at all when it's more warm.

I remember  a guy in the Triumph Trophy SE Forum who thought his heated seat didn't work. The real problem was he lived in San Jose.   Those in cold areas claim it's too warm and vice versa. The truth is it stays at the same temperature regardless of ambient temperature. So it will NOT work at all when ambient temperature is higher than the regulated temperature.

So could this be your "problem"? If so, it means they are working perfectly as is.

IOW, on a cold day in December, get a real test on how well they work.

I forgot to mention here that the TTSE regulates the temp for the seat, but NOT for the grips. The TTSE grips can feel hot anytime regardless of ambient temp.

So if you can find out if they regulate the temp on your heated grips on your Energica, that should answer your question. But even if not, they could still feel a lot warmer when it is extra cold outside.

At the 600 mile initial service, I had the dealer inspect the grips for functionality and they chalked up the difference between the Esse Esse 9’s and my Trophy’s heat output to a difference in manufacture (parts, etc).

It’s not a real big deal since I have noticed differences in heat output between various bikes I’ve owned, I just wanted to make sure it was working as designed. Besides, the Energica isn’t my cold weather commuter anyway, my Trophy gets that honor.

Yep. My TTSE is also my favorite cold weather bike of my nine.  It's the only bike I will take when it's below 45°F or so.   I have ridden it in the 20's a few times.

On "high" the TTSE grips draw 7 amps at 13.8 volts. The heated seat draws less than half of that on high. The seat  is PWM controlled temperature, wider pulses as it gets colder to maintain the same temperature on the seat. It's all internal inside the seat. But you can see the current draw and speed of the pulse change with an analog ammeter. The grip heaters in the TTSE are just pure DC.  I wonder what the current draw is of your Energica grips. I assume a lot lower than seven amps which is around  90 watts.

BTW, my Harley grips can get a lot hotter than my TTSE, but it has six settings.
