Charging Oscillations Between 0 kW to Max kW. Why?
« on: August 03, 2023, 02:36:05 PM »

I have 6 kW of charging capacity, extended by 10% (Cypher option), so it can now reach 6.6 kW. I only charge at stations rated 12 kW or above.

For some charging station (say 3-4 out of 10) I have observed than toward the last phase of some top-up charging sessions, when my SoC reaches above 95%, the charging power begins to oscillate. The graphic will explain better what I mean.

Since it does not happen all the time I am inclined to think that it is related to the charging station. Those of you with e-cars, did you already notice something similar? Does anyone know what's going on, how can these oscillations be explained. When charging at home with 3.3 kW, it always behaves as expected (green downward slope).

When this happens it makes charging time calculations oscillating as well. Overall, I'd say it then takes roughly 30% more time to automatically stop charging, but I hardly ever wait in these situations.

I probably should add that my 14.4 kWh battery is due to be replaced, so this charging behavior might be related to that.

It is due to your faulty battery indeed

Thanks for the feedback. Looking at some of your past posts, it appears you speak from experience.
Still, why isn't it systematic? Some charging sessions behave just fine.
Anyhow, I also remember this problem from when I still had my first battery.

I had the exact same issue, and found it was only a problem at some charge stations, particularly the ones I use at my workplace.

The workaround I used was to add disable switches to the chargers so that only one would be in use at a time when I use those stations.

This lowered the charge rate but absolutely stopped the oscillating.

When it was happening I actually heard a sort of crackling noise, and one or both chargers would drop out, then start charging again.

Personally I think some of these stations are sht and thats the cause of it.

Here's my thread about it:

Sorry, I didn't search well enough. Thank you for the confirmation, I was sure there must be someone else who noticed it.

In my case there was no special noise coming from the chargers, or maybe I couldn't hear it well enough. I have experienced this problem a couple of times with the original chargers and also with the new ones which got installed last fall (solving that pesky water ingress problem).

Anyhow, in recent weeks I did long trips through Germany, Switzerland and Austria, charged at least 20 times and mostly at 6.6 kW. Not once did I have this problem and my battery is still due to be replaced (now at <70% of nominal capacity).
