Real world experience with DigiNow Superchargers ?
« on: May 06, 2019, 05:16:39 PM »

Has anyone bought and used the DigiNow Belly Pan solution?

If yes, what are your experiences with:
  • max charging power: How much was the maximum charging power you ever observed?
  • Temperature increase in the Belly Pan: How fast does the temperature raise and do you see any loss in charging power wirh rising temperatures?

Well it's a bit self-serving of me to write this I suppose, but since no one else has posted yet I'll just share the following as I use the units every day. Now it should be noted that stations vary in voltage, and some stations deliver a grand total of like 8.5kW total if they're low voltage. There are, however, plenty of good stations out there as well at least where I am. I have used both a 3 (9.9kW) and 4 (13.2kW) unit setup extensively. The units definitely deliver full advertised power; it's up to the station to be capable of delivering it.

I've only thus far had one opportunity to use two J-stations with my 9.9 setup, and it maxed at 8.5kW (as MVetter says low power stations are likely to do... these stations already have previous complaints on PlugShare about being low power / slow).

That particular day, I did 170 miles over about seven hours (including charging time at three stops) of easy riding (rarely going above 55mph).  I did two 25min sessions of the dub-Js on two stations (8.5kW max) as the 1st and 3rd stops... 2nd stop was a 20min session on a single J connected to my 6.6 input (6.0kW while I was paying attention... probably went higher).

Ambient Alabama temps that day were in the 70s, and I had no heat issues with anything on the bike.

What's going on with DigiNow anyway?  The TLS certificate on the web site has expired, the order page doesn't work, and I can't get an email response.

I have the 6.6 kW bellypan setup - and I love it. It’s not as fast as the 9.9 kW set up, of course, but compared to what I used to do it’s very convenient.
I used to lug around 3 Quic-chargers and Y-adapters and a quad-splitter/adapter to add to the onboard charger for a total of about 4 kW of charging from two outlets - what pain!
Now? I pull up to a charging station, plug-in, and walk away.

Last weekend, for example - I rode 40 miles on the freeway, with my wife on the back of my bike (‘15 SR w/PowerTank), along with the flow of traffic (about 75 MPH). We arrived at our destination with 40% left in the battery pack, plugged-in, did some shopping, grabbed a snack and returned to the bike 45 minutes later at which point it had charged up to 80% - nearly 1%/minute.

I plan to do a lot more riding this summer - I’m soooo glad I did the bellypan Diginow upgrade. It works like the bike should have from the factory.

Doh. I'll tell Brandon to renew the stupid certificate. Takes all of 3 minutes. We never made an order page, and I apologize but I thought I had responded to all inquiries. That is if you emailed me. I sometimes need to go through Brandon's emails and forward inquiries to me so I can respond to people. There is a guy who keeps sending multiple inquiries despite my email responses. Not sure about that one.

Thanks!  I meant the pricing page (order.php).

Thanks for the replies. I am still somewhat surprised on the low amount of feedback, though. How many Belly Pan Chargers have DigiNow sold? Probably quite a lot I guess. Maybe we are still too early in the year. :)

I've had the 9.9 setup in my pan for probably over a year now.  I find it to be robust and can't believe I got along without it for almost the first 8 months of owning my 2017 DSR.  My particular set up does not have Jplugs mounted anywhere.  I keep them in my top box and when I'm about to charge, I connect one or two of them (depending on the situation) and they sort of hang to the ground and I connect the Chargepoints.  Yesterday I spend nearly 12 hours on the road exploring Yosemite and then riding back to Oakland.  At one point all chargers in Yosemite were occupied by Teslas so I had to leave the park and luckily found an RV park that let me charge up for a 1/2 hour.  The diginows have a great NEMA 1040/50 Amp plug that I use along with a splitter to get nearly 10k of charging power.
As for heating up, while charging at high power, I've noticed the batteries could heat up by around 10 degrees but unless you are a maniac on the road, they will cool down.  In the hot San Joaquin Valley of California during the Summer I've never come close to the bike powering down due to overheating though I'm sure it's been close a few times.  Two days ago, after a very long day of highway riding and charging, the battery was at 122 degrees.  Not sure how hot it can get before shutting down.
I also have to point out that I'm the type just just loves putting the mikes behind me and I don't think Zero designed the bike for long cruising in mind lol, but its been a great bike made better with the Diginows.  Just hit 29,0000 miles on it yesterday.
