Last thing in the world I wanted was yet ANOTHER key for the bike (already have to carry around ignition, top box, brake disk lock keys), so

Oh, wow, no.  Those multi-ring combo locks should never be used for anything you care about.  My local appliance repair guy showed me how easy those things are to pick when I was in middle school and had one on my favorite bike.  And now I'm happy to demonstrate it for anyone I care about who trusts one for anything they care about.

Uh, well, no. You don't "pick" a combination lock. You pick a padlock, like the other ones posted. I know because I've learned how to do it. No lock is secure; I can pick one of those cheesy three-tumbler file cabinet locks in seconds, a medium-grade padlock in perhaps a minute, a good deadbolt door lock takes a few minutes. (Read the book "Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman" for a description of the basics, and a very good read besides.) There are other, more secure locks like the barrel cylinder locks that Kryptonite uses, but even those can be defeated.

ALL you can achieve with a lock of any sort is to make life more difficult for the thief; how much more difficult depends on just how good the lock is. None of these offer any real security, except for the casual walk-by thief who grabs your helmet because he sees it isn't secured in any way. Which is the great majority of thefts in the real world.

Besides, if someone wants your helmet, all he has to do is bring a sharp knife, like many of us carry around with us in our pockets. The chin strap is far more vulnerable than even the simplest of locks. Slice through it in a second, buy a new one from the manufacturer, basically free helmet. Don't fool yourself that even a very expensive lock will prevent that.

A piece of rope with a complicated knot would take longer to unlock than ANY 'multi ring combo lock' My god those things are easy to open FAST with no tools at all.

Never Ever use one!!!

I simply use a regular bicycle lock, something like this, but a bit longer:

It is cheap and this way I can attach up to two helmets to the steering handle, while they rest on the storage compartment where I also store the lock while not in use. This configuration also adds one more obstacle for anyone who would want to snatch the bike.  :)

I use a cable lock like the one shown above (that uses a combination lock so that I don't need to carry around another key) and attach it to the passenger grab rail and through my helmet chin guard.

I have one like that for my FX cause it's so light and easy to carry away. Thread it through full face helmet, jacket sleeve, and around pole.

Another configuration I use is: hang helmets on pillon pegs, thread cable through rear wheel, through helmets, and lock on top of saddle.

I've never worried about a helmet lock. I just set my helmet on the ground beside the bike, and have never had a problem. OK, might  not  do that in (parts of) San Fran/east bay. But most everywhere I ride I'm OK with assuming no one's going to walk away with my helmet. Maybe I'm too trusting -- but it's worked for me so far.

I would be worried about someone accidentally kicking the helmet, a dog peeing on it, or something crawling into the helmet while it was on the ground, than it being stolen. That is why I prefer to keep my helmets off of the ground.

While not a lock at all, these hooks thread right into my existing threaded bolt hole on my 2018 SR

As far as locks go, the cable lock would be the most secure option.
Most people don't think about the fact the if it goes through the ring(s)
that secure the strap, someone can just cut it with a pair of pliers. At least
the cable can go through the helmet. If you are wearing anything less than
a good full helmet, it SHOULD get stolen
