most time efficient speed?
« on: March 24, 2019, 02:16:05 PM »

I have found by my self that the fastest way to travel a long distence is at the speed of your charging power
exemple: if it takes 1hour to charge your battery you should go at a speed that discharge your battery in 1hour
or charge at 1C and discharge at 1C
am I right???

No, this is not right as a general rule, because the air resistance is almost proportional to v^2.

It may be close enough for the current zero's, but for example with my Ioniq this would set the ultimate speed to around 180km/h while the optimum is much lower (around 130km/h).
I made a spreadsheet showing this, however one should note that the data are estimates based loosely on my experience, so the actual numbers may vary.

first, sorry for my bad english I am from Montreal, Québec, Canada

the 3 data I used for my rule of thumb are (160km a 50km/h) (97km at 89km/h) and (64km at 113km/h) https://www.topspeed.com/motorcycles/motorcycle-reviews/zero-motorcycles/2019-zero-fxs-ar184409.html

if I want to travel 1000km and assume a 1C charging and that lvl2 chargers are everywere:)
At 50km/h its a 26.21 hour ride (20h riding/6.25h charging)
At 89km/h its a 21.54 hour ride (11.24h riding/10.3h charging) (close to 1C riding)
At 113km/h its a 24.47 hour ride (8.85h riding 15.6h charging)

with a Emotorcycle you can go fast or far, not both :'( (I still love my fsx)

yes, to have the exact optimal speed you need to your wh/km at any speed, and I dont have that data with my 2018fxs but I know that my theory is pretty acurate for my case.

and others things to take in consideration while finding the optimal time efficient speeds for a trip are, the weather, the emplacement of the chargers, the bonus charge when you sleep (long trip 8)) or stop for others reason then charging (tourism or whatever) and if you ride behind something big ;) ( on my fxs riding 1-2car length behind a semi at 80km/h is like riding about 50km/h behind nothing)

is there a way to know my wh/km?

finaly lets talk about the most time efficient speed for my ICE car ;D ;D ;D

This is why an S or DS bike with a Power Tank can travel long distances better, because charging at a higher rate (when possible) increases the speed at which one can travel most efficiently.

I’ll repeat that to be clearer:

The best speed to travel on the road, given a long distance charge and ride cycle, depends on the drag curve and the rate of charge you’ll actually experience at the end of that travel leg.

The effect of the drag curve with speed is that, for a given increase in speed, at some point drag starts increasing enough that you’ll lose more time from charging than you’ll gain from arriving earlier because of that speed change.

This can be frustrating, because:
- sometimes a charging plan doesn’t work and you’re left charging more slowly than planned, which loses a lot of time.
- this is airspeed, not groundspeed, which means a headwind changes what speed is best.

What it means in practice is that:
- a windscreen and other streamlining efforts allow you to travel faster or to suffer less from a headwind.
- watching your Wh/mi or Wh/km on the dash is important even if the figure is inaccurate, because the rate it rises tells you when you’re pushing too hard into the wind.

With your data, it seems you will get maximum efficiency slightly above 90km/h.
You can calculate wh/km from your data, if you know the usable energy storage (6,5 kwh)
ie at 50km/h and 160km range you get 6500wh/160km = 40,6wh/km.
