I have an interesting problem.... I have a Zero SR/F on order but my local Energica dealer also has a new 2017 Eva in stock, at the 2018 MSRP of 18K.
My worry would be that the battery is now 2 1/2 years old and has likely just been sitting on low charge. Is it possible to check the state of the battery and is my worry justified?

I test drove both bikes and I like the "lightness" of the SR/F compared to the top-heavy Eva. In terms of power I don't think there is much difference and unlike what I expected I think the SR/F goes a bit faster of the line since the Eva (2017=80kW) seems to have a very soft throttle coming of a stand-still. Which makes sense if you factor in the 100lbs less on the Zero. But my point being - the power difference does not feed into my decision making as it is too close to call. However the test rides are 4 weeks apart now so my memory might trick me here.

What the SR/F has going for it is probably a longer range, especially with the extra battery that I was planning to add when it comes out in fall. The Eva of course has DC charging which is plenty available around here.

The Eva was also very stiffly set up, but I assume the fully adjustable suspension can take care of that.

I do like the SR/F's look better - less is more and I think they hit the nail on the head with avoiding complexity; i.e. the Eva with liquid cooling, reduction gearbox etc just seems to have a lot more complexity to it - visually as well as technically... does it matter? not sure

What would you do?

I think your decision comes down to determining how important fast charging is to you. Do you want to go on road trips? Even short ones that may require a single charge. I have a 2016 SR and had a 2014 SR before that. Also have an Eva 107. Will never buy another electric motorcycle without DCFC. For me to ride to my Zero/Energica dealer requires charging and charging on CCS instead of L2 makes a big difference. Last year over July 4th I road out to western NC on my Eva 107, a trip I made several times with my SR with dual Elcons (6.3kw charging) and CCS charging cuts several hours off the trip. 300 miles in one day is a big deal on a Zero. 300 miles in a day on an Eva isn't. There are threads here on charging and some have no interest in faster charging. I think it all depends on what you want to do with the bike and where you see yourself going on it. I actually test road a SF/R yesterday. Performance is impressive. I think up to about 70 MPH the performance is extremely close to the Eva. But once you start going above that the Eva will pull away from the SR/F. Regen on the SF/R is better than the SR but far weaker than the Eva. Think the Eva has higher spec brakes and suspension. All personal preference on whether any of that matters. If a high level of performance is important I will go with the Eva. Yes the SR/F is fast but if you are going to push hard on tight twisty roads I think the Eva will outrun the SR/F. Not an easy decision, good luck.

Thank you, the charging point you make is really key... I live in the Los Angeles area so fast charging is plentiful.

I still have one question though - if I add the charge tank to the sr/f, do I need to plug the bike into two chargers or just one and hope that has 12kW? As far as I know most J chargers only support 6.6kW.

No matter what though, the Eva will still charge faster...

I don't think it is possible to plug into 2 J1772 at the same time. There is a topic on the Zero forum about J1772 output power. Terry H responded to it and said that about 99.9% of all J1772 outlets are only 6.6 kw or so. Those that are more than that are extremely rare. Having the SR/F being able to charge up to 11kw helps out our European friends because of the higher powered AC charging systems they have over there. It doesn't do much for those of us in the US although you might be able to find something for home charging that is a lot faster than 6.6kw. The Eva charges at 22kw/70A and starts to taper at about 67% SOC.

My understanding is if you plug your 12KW charger into a 6.6KW J-1772, all will be fine except for the fact that you will be charging at 6.6KW. IOW,  it should always work on any J-plug, regardless of how low power it is. Just your charge rate will be lower. But it can use whatever J-1772 you can find.

It would be nice if there was a way to use two of the 6.6KW J-stations to get your 12 KW, but that is not available (yet).  The bike will need two separate  chargers in it for that.

I would agree with ultrarnr: if you are a cruiser, the SRF could be an option with the lower centre of gravity and weight advantage. You have enough power to embarass the ICE bikes.  If you are a racer, The Eva is to consider with the better brakes and suspension (options).  An Eva is actually an Ego with different engine mapping...

It's still early to say, but what would the range of the SRF do in comparison with the Eva, when the bikes are pushed hard where the Eva can still use the strong regen most?

Charging: The Eva AC charger can potentially be upgraded in the future (like Diginow), the Zero will never be upgraded to CCS charging.

Just some considerations, good luck with your choice.

I just did 670 miles in 24 hours on an EVA Esse Esse 9 The Eva platform bikes are SUPER comfortable, and absolutely amazing bikes.
