Location for a tracker and a charging port?
« on: July 08, 2018, 05:51:06 PM »

I appreciate this is two separate questions but I thought I would ask...

1. Given a single DigiNow 2.5 3.3kW unit in the belly pan of a Zero DS and a European Type-2 Mennekes charging socket, where on the bike do you tend to put the socket and how do you secure it?

I have seen folks talking about using the passenger foot peg location but I would appreciate opinions on how it is anchored and which side of the bike you find it more convenient (assume a UK bike with the side stand on the left). A picture of an actual installation would be much appreciated.

2. Where on the bike are suitable locations for hiding a tracker. Specifically I am talking about the Automatrics MTrack which comes in two variants - the rechargeable adhesive box at 132x64x40mm and the wired unit at 45x45m20mm. I assume the wired unit requires a power feed from the bike so do you know if there is a suitable connector somewhere?

I appreciate folks may not want to mention *exactly* where the item can be hidden but any guidance along the lines of "never put it under the seat" or "try to find a space between the battery and tank space". The bike will be a DS ZF7.2 11kW if that makes a difference.

I already realise that putting it in the metal belly pan is not a good idea as the metal will block a lot of the signals.

Thanks in advance for the help.

1. I have one J inlet installed using Zero's Charge Tank plastics and bracket, and this is still the best place at least for a J1772 inlet.

The other locations compromise on weather protection, but charging inlets themselves are pretty solid about that. My real concern is about weathering, straining, and motion on the cabling to and from the plug. I'm not satisfied with the options so far, but I'd like to have it stick out of the left side of the center of the bike on a bracket fastened solidly to the frame and battery casing.

2. I haven't worked this out myself, but have had a Zero stolen without a tracker so it's interesting. Most thieves are not going to be competent working with a Zero, although admittedly me maintaining zeromanual.com as the single best resource for them to self-educate is ... ironic.

Your logic about the placement seems reasonable. Maybe you could ask Zero, since they made a little noise about testing an integrated anti-theft device in the field. Or I'll ask at least.

I think one constraint is that the likely source for an always-on power supply is between the doghouse and the DC converter. "Somewhere in the middle of the bike that is hard to take apart", annoyingly.

Next question about locating the tracker on the bike... the tracker unit has a rechargeable battery and once a year you need to expose the tracker and top it up. I have the option using adhesive tape (which I already have) or fixing it with neodymium magnets.

What material (steel, aluminium or plastic) am I likely to encounter in the cavities where I could fit the tracker?

The issue of where to put the tracker is resolved... I have paid for my Dealer to fit a wired tracker while prepping the bike. He does the wiring, I keep the Thatcham certification.
