Another dumb question from a Zero newbie - battery temp
« on: July 23, 2018, 11:06:12 AM »

The battery temp must be important, because Zero puts it on their simple dashboard.
Riding up the steep mountain roads here in the southern Appalachians, the battery on my 2018 S 7.2 gets into the high 100s F, but not to 200 F sometimes. These temps drop after the climb is done. Is that OK? Do I have a mouse nest or similar blocking the passive cooling system?

For those unfamiliar with the southeast USA mountains, sustained 12% or steeper grades are common, vertical gains typically in the 600-2k ft range (200-600m), temps in the 60's - 80s F.  The roads are twisty, with 50 mph (80kph) sometimes, but often slower.

The temperature on the dash is not the battery temperature - it's the temperature of the motor. The behaviour you observed is normal.

Thanks. I guess I was confused by comments on other threads about charging being limited or even blocked at high battery temps. So battery temp matters and it would make sense to display it.
Why display the motor temp?

Heroto,

The motor temp is also a source of shutdown on the bike. And I would venture previously it was the prime reason bikes would throttle back power vs the battery.

This is why you can access both it and the battery temps being monitored for cutback / shunting in the zero app while riding.

We have 3 temperatures being monitored:
• Motor
• Battery
• Controller

Any of them exceeding will blink temperature warning.
When it's beyond safety it will cutback power were needed.
So you can do full trottle, but the power will be less.
The warning indication is continues now.
This will stay untill temp is safe again.

On the Zero app you can select them for your extra dashboard on phone while riding.

While riding I noticed:
• motor temp is the one too monitor.
At 100°C blinking start but still power.
At 116°C continues start and less power.

So when riding firmly I stay between them  :o 8)

I don't know if you'd consider the Blue Ridge Mountains same terrain as where you are riding, but I did that trip with passenger and 75lbs of luggage. No motor temp problems at all. If i understand correctly, you get a warning and then the bike will reduce power if you don't slow down, etc.
