Led have polarity, while bulbs do not. It is important to get it right otherwise it is an "open", they are diodes.

Finally solved my issue today.  When I first read these posts, I did not have success switching the +/- wires leading to each signal.  However, after re-reading some other posts, I tried switching the +/- wires leading into the relay.  It worked!  I'm now LED front and back.  The $1 bulbs that I linked above are working fine, and fit within the stock housings.
