Plastic fade
« on: May 16, 2017, 10:31:47 PM »

Has anyone seen if zero will cover faded plastics under warranty?  My 2015 is garaged, and it gets parked in the shop at work, so it has barely sat outside at all and the plastics are badly faded to a grey color.

I don't think so, but the plastics can be replaced at fairly low cost, or taking them off and covering the "tank bag" with tape for a quick paint job is pretty easy.

I was thinking of painting these,  and buying new ones if I don't like it, but I shouldn't have to after less than two years. My farm beater atv has been outside for 20 years and it isnt anymore faded. Oh well, if the only problem I have is plastic discoloration that's not much to complain about

You could always buy the 2017 plastics which should not fade similarly.

Yeah, your farm beater is probably painted. New 2017 coverings are like $100, and painted. Will last forever.

I believe the 2015's are still unpainted, simply colored plastic, so you should theoretically be able to sand down to good color, then buff out to a high shine. Of course you'll have to remove the Zero emblem from the "tank" and wherever else, re-apply afterwards, and of course you'll be back in the same boat in a couple of years.

Or you could take the opportunity to re-finish the bike with the color of your choice and the material of your choice.  :) Finish it the way you'd like with the durable material you'd like.

This material did wonders to my FX faded plastics, highly recommended, and could not be easier to do -

Do you have any white spots under the brake fluid reservoir?

If so, that could be brake fluid bleaching form a factory overfilled brake fluid.  I got my 2015 plastics warrantied when I showed Zero Customer Service the faded plastics and the white spots.  Thanks Zero.

Can you show with photos? Would it work mostly for a black plastic or any kind?

I updated http://zeromanual.com/index.php/Unofficial_Service_Manual#Panel_Material at least with this.

Did not take before & after photos...
This material (Polytrol) works well on all plastics color, beside white!
Take that into consideration (DS I suppose)

On my 2015 plastic there was small cracking.  I don't know if any snake-oil will fix that.

I'm not sure how to resolve the cracking but I've got a standby for plastics. Most boat supply stores will have both vinyl and plastic UV blockers. New fiberglass boats get hammered by the sun so those tend to be some of the better blocker/restorer systems I've found. Usually a wipe on cream that buffs up to a high shine with a shop rag.

I upgrades to the 2017 plastics on my 2015 SR.  Not cheap at ~$450, with the storage tank making up the bulk of that cost.  Looks great though and I'm still waiting for the fender since the red one I received was a particularly yellow shade of red.

The dealer only ordered the upper tail piece by mistake.  It's probably for the best though, since the installation is less than 5 minutes and without fading on the lower you can't even tell the difference.
