I finish test riding two 2017 models today.  A SR and DSR at Motorcycles of Dulles in Virginia.  Loved the SR so much I ordered one right after the test ride.  Suppose to be delivered before Thanksgiving.

My Zero dealer in Raleigh, NC has a 2017 DS demo in. They said they had it before the announcement by Zero but could not have it out or talk about it. My guess is most dealers probably have something in by now. Did like the lockable storage compartment.

I never ridden a Zero motorcycle before yesterday.  I have been watching them online for a couple years though, so I have a good understanding of the transitions they have made.  The salesman was funny saying that I need to start you off in ECO mode so you don't let it get away from you right away.  I have a 2015 R1200GS Adventure so I don't think this little thing is going to get away from me  .

After 20 seconds in ECO mode I was quickly switching it out to SPORT mode.  The ECO mode felt so slow to build any normal speed it felt being on an electric bicycle.  Thank goodness it has SPORT mode or this would have been shortest test drive ever.  Once I switch to SPORT though I was sold!  The power rush was like being on one of my old sport bikes rev'd out 10,000 rpms.  Was hitting 70 mph plus in a couple seconds.  Will be using this strictly as a commuter bike; good thing my commute is less than 40 miles round trip else I might get range anxiety given how fast I plan to ride this.

Will be using this strictly as a commuter bike; good thing my commute is less than 40 miles round trip else I might get range anxiety given how fast I plan to ride this.

I have a 100 mile round trip once/week - and I ride fast. My '15 SR is capable of a sustained top speed of 80 MPH (specs say 85, but the flashing red temperature light comes on before then).
At those speeds (around 80 MPH) I burn through about 70% of my 15 kWh battery pack each way (luckily I can charge back up at my destination).
Now that the Zeros are capable of a higher sustained top speed you won't have the 80 MPH barrier, but you will burn through the kWh's more quickly (depending on how fast you ride).

Did you opt for the PowerTank? Congrats on the new toy.

BTW - your Beemer is rated at 92 ft-lbs of torque @6500 RPM vs. 116 @ 0 RPM for the Zero SR. I'm not surprised that you were impressed :-)

My local dealer in MD had a '17 DSR as early as 11/5 (maybe a day or two before that even that's when I saw it), so few days before that in GA, and available for test rides. Definitely before any info was up on Zero's web site. I thought I heard the '16 demo DSR maybe something like $4K less than the '17 would cost now, which is not a bad discount. Though I think for those who plan to do some light off-roading the new beefier and hopefully stronger belt would be a good upgrade.

As with oobflier, in our area I feel the '15 SR with the non IPM motor is fully adequate for commuting - I too have seen the warning light for overheating once when I was exceeding 80mph for a few miles. And speeds like that are pretty much unachievable in sane situations for more than a couple of miles at a time  - too much traffic and the speed limit is usually 55 to 65 max and not many go above 75 except to pass... So fully adequate. But I can see in some less trafficky areas with higher speed limits and higher ambient temps than 85-90F the IPM motor of the '16 models and the further improved '17 would be nice to have.

I think the reason the Zero feels slower off the line is the single electric drive opposed to having multiple gears.  When moving the torque on the Zero is really impressive (at least in Sport).  My BMW in first gear will pull hard enough from a stand-still to wheelie with a clutch drop, and that is with a bike weighing over 600 lbs with current accessories mounted.

I ordered the SR with the Charge Tank so I could do charging at the office, and maybe someday at home when I decide to spend the money for a Level 2 EVSE.  When I spoke with owner of '13 S at the dealership he said I should expect 80 miles to a single charge on the 13 kw battery when riding aggressive, and about 50 miles when below 32 degrees outside.  Either way, I should be good with charging only at the office with my 20 mile commute x 2.
