DC Fast Charging in the Twisties!
« on: September 24, 2016, 09:50:39 AM »

Looks like Energica is going to install 20kW CCS stations "targeting the best roads motorcyclists love to ride through".  Sounds pretty awesome! Definitely for California and Italy.  I look forward to finding out more details to find out where else stations will be installed.

I wish Zero supported CCS so that we could use them too  :(

I am looking forward to seeing Energica deal with Alice's Restaurant in the Santa Cruz Mountains.  That is the closest obvious location for a back-road charging station to their only U.S. store.  The problem with Alice's is that the place is so popular that there are no unused parking areas where charging stations could be installed that would not take away from IC parking.  And if push comes to shove, the charging stations would be ICE'ed (starting before 8 am each weekend morning) and the owners would not irritate a customer by running them out of the station spot if it was not in use.  Plus, their electric system sucks and it would likely take a lot of money to upgrade it to accommodate any sort of EV charging, much less fast charging. (I have talked to one of the restaurant owners and he said that any charging station infrastructure to be installed would have to be funded by someone other than them.)

I think the best location for new charging stations at the 35/84 junction would be in the parking lot across the street, where the H2 station is currently being constructed.  With charging stations at that location at least the new H2 facility would get some business - even if it isn't for dispensing gas.   ;)

Given that they will be using the CCS standard I wonder how many motorcycles will be able to use it
given that so many of the Electric Automobiles will be using the same connector.

Do you mean because they will be occupied when you get there to charge?

That is correct.
CHAdeMO Was the first ( widespread ) DC fast charging standard.
US market is moving towards the CCS standard. Most of the upcoming
EVs with fast charging will have the CCS for this.
Energica is going to have to put some sort of controls on the chargers if
they want them available for their Motorcycles. I believe that the top part
of a CCS charger works with existing J1772 ports. Not sure if the bottom
part will do ONLY DC fast charging.

This is the problem with emerging technology, companies want market share before the "best" or publicly accepted best is truly found.
I think people are just used to a 5 min refuel and even 30 min full charge will be balked at by a lot of people.

So far the DC fast charging at high voltage is the fastest for these batteries.
But J1772 level 2 charging is taking a foot hold and has massive expansion so if it fails it will sour investors on charging as a whole.
Level 2 rate just won't cut it for millions of soccer moms and the 9 to 5 crowd that is needed to make EVs the preferred choice for family car needs.
I don't know the solution but I see problems with well established "lesser" technology bullying a better way.

Beta VS VHS all over again.
As far as soccer moms go, if chargers end up " everywhere ", it will be just another habit to get into. Stop car, get out, plug in,
get kids out of car seats go on about your business. Stores, parks soccer fields etc.  When done get back to car, load people / cargo,
unplug, then, on to next stop and repeat. The problem that protagonists have is " I need to fully charge NOW ! ". I have been driving
EVs for most of the last decade. The first thing that I do when  I get a new EV is run it out in a controlled situation. After that,
I am able to go about driving / riding it without the range anxiety people claim to be concerned about. I have had very
few "accidental" range issues. Agreed, present EVs aren't suitable for 100% of our driving but, very close. I point out
to people that if you get that emergency phone call in the middle of the night and you have to drive a few hundred
miles away, and your only transportation is an EV, you are presently stuck ( unless you have a Tesla ). Then I ask
" When is the last time you got that emergency call? " I have the ability to fully charge my Focus electric in 2.5 to 3 hours. I usually
plug int into 120V and charge while at work or overnight. I also try to coordinate my running around to businesses near where I can
plug in while doing my everyday errands. I can also charge my FX 5.7 in the same time frame. Again, I usually just use the single
on board charger. I plug in when I am in for the evening and everything is full the next morning.

I hope Energica has heard of the "Tail of the Dragon", otherwise known as US 129 in western NC/eastern TN. There is already a J1772 system and Tesla HPWC there. Deals Gap has NEMA 14-50 outlets in their camp grounds. A DCFC system would just top everything off. Without question this is one of the most popular motorcycle roads in the country.
