Zero's website is correct, they list the motors as "Permanent Magnet" on the FX motor, and "Interior Permanent Magnet"  motor on the FXS. most likely the people at the dealership don't have a clue. if your not reading carefully, it's easy to miss.

yes, the only real diff is the manner in which they attach the magnets to the rotor

as for the whole wheelie debate, yes you can wheelie an FXS, it's just not as easy as ham fistting the throttle. you don't have to bounce, but it sure helps, and you better be in just that sweet spot on the throttle and balance point. personally, this is the only real disappointment i have with the bike, i do wish i could stand it on its ass at will. oh well though, probably end up saving my ass in the long run.  ::)

laters,

laramie  ;)

The FX is really wheeling by itself, the SR not at all although it would have enough torque to do so.  I rode both and difference to me, is the delay or ramp applied by the controller to apply full torque to prevent the SR wheeling. So I am afraid that it also a controller setting in the FXS...

Humm,  may be you are right.   When I tried the chain kit on the FX that had a shorter gearing the FX was always wheeling

Motor overheating only happens when you've got the throttle pinned open for long periods of time. This mainly happens on the freeways and is extremely unlikely to happen off road.

I have never had any overheating issues even after a few freeway trips. I don't think the difference is great enough to justify modifying an FXS back to an FX just to avoid overheating on off road conditions.

Or when dragging a deer sled with fresh kill on it.. (happened to me in deep snow here in Virginia)

2016 FX  Motor Specs:Z-Force 75-5 passively air-cooled, high efficiency, radial flux permanent magnet, brushless motor
2016 FX High efficiency, 420 amp, 3-phase brushless controller with regenerative deceleration
2017 FX  Motor Specs:Z-Force 75-5 passively air-cooled, high efficiency magnet, brushless motor
2017 FX Magnet Configuration: Radial flux interior permanent
2017 Controller: High efficiency, 550 amp, 3-phase brushless controller with regenerative deceleration

I think it is - also the controller got upgraded.. might be time to trade/sell my 2013 FX 5.7
