Introducing Phocks of Western Australia
« on: December 13, 2015, 08:43:59 AM »

Responding to the suggestion that new members should introduce themselves here I go.
Taking delivery of a new MY14 Zero DS (Police bike less lights and siren) next week. 14 of these bikes were imported to Australia recently offering a reduced buy in price as these bikes were left over from an order. They are all black and 11.4 battery pack models. We do not have an agent/dealer in Western Australia and if you like to Google Maps Melbourne where my dealer is and my location Perth Western Australia you will see it's a long way away. The delivery truck is due Tuesday 15th December 2015. As far as I can tell my Zero will be only the second in Western Australia the first is a Zero SR.
I live about 400m above sea level and travel to work on what we call the flats (about 20m above sea level) some 44km away. Much of the ride will be on roads with a 100KPH (62MPH) speed limit.
Some of my work colleagues are concerned that my round trip of 88km will not be possible because I have a very unfair reputation for being a bit of a "fanger" (Aussie slang for making full use of the available power)
The test will be in the riding.
A quick look through the Forum left me with impressions of a good group to be associated, I hope I live up to those expectations.
Regards 'Phocks'

Hiya Phocks. You are in fact number three. Sam has a 2014 SR which I saw at the Electrikana earlier this year and sealed my desire for one. I took delivery of my 2015 SR in July of this year. I bought from the Melbourne dealer as well. I've done just over 3k now as my daily commute from Kalamunda to the CBD in all weathers including the storms in July to the recent 42 degree days and it hasn't missed a beat. Little tip if you don't have arrangements, check SGIO for insurance, they were almost a third of the cost of others. Welcome and congrats, well soon have enough owners for a local catchup, cheers, John

Welcome and let us know how you get on with your DSP. I'm in line for one here in the UK and it'll be interesting to compare notes. I'll try not to whinge too much about it! [emoji6]

Hello John and thanks for the SGIO tip. I am delighted to give up second place anything to get more of them on the road in WA. As for a local catch up, it sounds great (Sunday morning ride to Toodyay for breakfast?). Stephen...

Hello PhreaK you may notice I got it wrong I am the third not the second to bring a Zero into WA, which makes it even better as far as I am concerned. Stephen...

Hello MostlyBonkers looking forward to my bike arriving on Wednesday 16th. A friend will pick it up for me and bring it out to my home 40km away because I am out all week testing RV's. I have attached a couple of Photos of my bike being unpacked by the Dealer in Melbourne. He asked if I wanted the engine bars left on but insisted the siren and the blue and red led lights came off. Heya Phocks

Excellent! I'm one of the small throng of East coasters with Zero's. Currently got a '14DS and previously had a '10DS.

You might be interested in this free map i created a while back https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=1177834

It shows locations of people, businesses who are happy to help with charging including a  dozen or so in WA

Welcome to the madness

Thanks Nigezero for the support and the map. I have just been shown the PlugShare App for my iPad apparently there is a version for the other phones and tablets as well. I plan to make a 240volt outlet available for those in need but unsure if I will get any passing electrics that need a help in Wooroloo. I also got my RFID card to use on the Electric Hwy (

Let me know I want some 14 ds crash bars

OK it's time to compare notes now I have covered a 1000km. Took delivery of the bike on the 17th December And did an online permit to ride it to Work then to a vehicle examination for road registration and back home on 18th Dec 2015. While I am sure you were shivering in the UK Bonkers, most of us in the Southern Hemisphere were cooking and in my case it's been a series of 35degC and plus days. So the target was to ride the thing for 1000km and then review the process. Most rides have been of greater than 50km with several at greater than 100km. My habit of riding quickly has meant that by 100km I am getting concerned about the battery percentage. An 88km ride to Toodyay and back home on all open roads of 100 or 110kph meant I was left with 6%. Most other longer rides to show off the bike at friends places have resulted in borrowing 1 or two hours of power (when I say borrow I have no idea how I am going to return the power.) I have had no issues other than one loose bolt on the rear number plate bracket that I spotted in time and have resisted modifications.
I have measured the inline mains charging current at a little less than 6amps which was what I was expecting because we have 240voltsAC rather than the USA 110voltsAC and their quoted 12amps. As a result of this I have purchased a 5metre (16foot) computer cord rated at 7.5amps that I can fold up and store in the frame hole above the motor, it expands in the hole and grips in place nicely. The supplied charging cord is rather heavy and bulky and obviously is needed in 110volt markets.
I am normally a fair weather rider since migrating to Australia from North Devon in 1971 where my only transport was a Yamaha 80cc bike ridden in snow, rain and fog. So it came as a suprise the other day to ride through two hail storms on my way home and an alarming number of lightening strikes locally. Five of these strikes caused local bushfires all of which were quickly extinguished by the local East Gidgeganup, Gidgeganup and Wooroloo fire brigades (Good on you guys and gals).
Christened by others "Darth Pom" because it looks like the sort of thing Darth Vader would ride and whines like a Pom (local name of British Migrant) I prefer to call it Public Transport because I don't have to put fuel in it.
Bottom line it's been a great experience, I am looking forward to using it on a fairly regular basis and to cover some of the typical 40000km per year I drive. I have also decided to have a rationalisation of bikes and will be selling off a Christini DS 450 AWD, a Yamaha WR250, a Yamaha WR450, 3 Yamaha TY's and a Honda farm/postie bike thing. However I plan to retain two more Yamaha TY's (the 42nd oldest TY175B made and one of the 8000 fairly rare TY350 mono shock bikes as well as a delightful KTM Freeride 350. It's amazing what we collect as toys!!!!

Over to you Bonkers how are you finding your DSP?

I'm still waiting for my DSP I'm afraid. Mostly courtesy of the paperwork that the DVLA needs to handle. Pickup date is 20th. I've got Insurance setup and paid for at least.

Nice write-up Phocks. Darth Pom? Love it! [emoji1]

First impressions are good Phocks. Mine has been named Gladys by my wife. It reminds me of the Welsh girl in Hi-de-Hi, Gladys Pugh, who was played by Ruth Madoc. The bike is black and she had black hair. Aside from name and hair colour, I think that's where any similarities end. I'd like to think Gladys would have been a good ride too, but I can't claim to have any experience... [emoji6] Besides, the actress is older than my Mum. I digress...

I'll do my best to report on how the bike goes over the coming days, weeks and months. Darth Pom still tickles me. I mentioned it to the guys at Streetbike today and a few colleagues at work have enjoyed the story too. Genius! [emoji4]
