Los Angeles riding tips
« on: November 04, 2015, 03:56:55 AM »

Hi,
I will visit Los Angeles from 6 to 12 November for business reasons and have rented a motorcycle to do the commuting (I heard traffic is terrible there and that lane splitting is legal in California). I tried to find an electric bike but nobody is renting them out :-(

It is my first visit to Los Angeles and I would like some tips on good routes to ride. Gpx files are welcome too. I will do some rides after work or before.

My main touristic attraction will be to visit the world famous electric motorcycle shop: "Hollywood Electrics" of course [emoji3]
I have some free time on Saturday so I  hope that I can find the shop and that they don't mind me parking an ICE bike in front...

Thanks

Not only visit them but also take a test ride on a Zero.

Hi kingcharles. Let me know when you plan on stopping by. If time permits maybe I can join you and give you a guided tour of some great riding spots.

Getting Harlan to take you on Mulholland Drive over to Lake Hollywood Park would provide a nice ride with some iconic views, but Harlen would be more knowledgeable about that specific area.

If you have the time, Mulholland Highway in the Santa Monica Mountains (just West of Los Angeles) and Angeles Crest Highway in the Angeles National Forrest (just North of Los Angeles) are a couple of signature rides for this area.  The website http://www.motorcycleroads.com/Routes/California_80.html has details and reviews on some area rides, but is by no means complete.  Just about all of the canyons in the Santa Monica Mountains are fun in the day; not so much after dark.  If you google the specific canyon road or search on YouTube, you can frequently find video's and reviews.  I am not at all familiar with the area South of Los Angeles.  I find it best to assume that any corner I cannot see around gets tighter, has rocks slide out onto the road with a bicyclist in the middle of the lane trying to get around the rocks and a car crossing over the double yellow in the other lane.

If you are not comfortable with heavy traffic, avoid the freeways as they can be quite unforgiving.  The worst time is just off peak when the freeways are still full but moving at 70+. That 3 second gap you should maintain is just not going to happen.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your trip.

I would prefer a test ride on the Energica ;-)

Hi Harlan,

I am aiming to be there in the morning. With the time difference I will be up early anyway!
Riding with you would be a real honour but I don't want to impose.

Hi Chocula,

Thanks for the tips!
I already downloaded some gpx files from that site. Looking forward to doing the ride along the coast line.

I just checked my calendar, I forgot I'll be out of town this weekend riding at a track day at Spring Mountain. Sorry I'll miss you, but I'll be back on Tuesday so if you're still around, maybe we can catch up next week. You should still stop by on Saturday. I know Carl will be happy to show you the bikes and send you off on a test ride.
