GIVI side cases
« on: October 26, 2015, 04:15:50 PM »

Has anybody purchased the side case rack kit from Zero and used it to mount a different set of side cases from GIVI other than the ones offered by Zero?

It seems like other side cases from GIVI should work but I don't have a store local where I could confirm before buying so I thought I would check to see if anyone else has already done it.  Post pictures if possible  ;D

I am looking at one of these two sets that will allow a full face helmet, unlike the ones offered by Zero.  They will stick out a little further but to me it will be worth it to be able to get a helmet in there when the top box has a Super Charger in it.

Aren't there just two ways to mount a Givi case: Monolock and Monokey? All the side cases seem to be listed as Monokey. So the mounting hardware should be the same. You just need to figure out if the case itself will interfere with something on the bike.

I had e21 boxes on my vstrom and could mount e41 as well on the same brackets, e21 are the boxes for the zero, but I can't confirm that the e41 will hold a helmet

The V35 cases require a different rack that curves inward around the tail / exhaust pipes, so they don't apply.

[Update] The E-series and Trekker side cases should fit, which include the E360's that are simpler than E41N's and a bit narrower.

There are newer versions of the E21 cases which are a tiny bit bigger: the E22.

Personally, I'm going to install Motech adapters which are usually for TraX cases but I have some aerodynamic Aero cases that carry 33L and have a good profile.

You need to make sure you get "Monokey" bags - the "Monolock" stuff is a smaller footprint system for scooters.

The old E45 cases fit barely. They touch the turn signals, but not too badly. With 135 liters of storage, I can bring home almost an entire shopping cart worth of groceries. I do miss having the tank storage to put the bread so it doesn't get smushed.

As those are probably the biggest cases Givi made, anything else should fit.

I did confirm at AIMExpo that the awesome new Trekker cases fit too. I need to save up for a set of those.

According to GIVI's video the v35 and e41 both hold a full face helmet.

I use an alternative GIVI top case for my FX. It works just fine, even provides a passenger back rest.

This is what I was concerned about.  The V35 is monokey just like e21 and e41.  I don't see anywhere on GIVI's site that it mounts different and in the videos it looks like the indents on the bottom are set in such that the case would still work with the rack mount zero sells.

I think the v35 is narrower on top than e41 but wider on the bottom.  But because of the way it mounts it looks like the overall profile of the bike would be narrower with v35s than e41s even though the v35 is an inch wider at the bottom.

Actually, they make 55 liter cases  :o http://www.giviusa.com/givi-products/cases/monokey-cases/e55ntluxa-tech-case-55ltr-detail

Do you have pictures?  I am curious to see what the bike looks like with cases that big  ;D

Does anybody know how big the GIVI top case Zero sells is?  The GIVI site says the 46 liter cases hold two full face helmets and I know I can't get two full face helmets in my top box so it has to be smaller than that.  I was thinking its got to be in the 30-40 liter range.

Yes, that makes them very attractive and aerodynamic. But you'll have to figure out how to make it work on the Zero yourself.

Short version: learn to weld or ask/pay a welder to adapt an existing mount. FWIW, Terry has welded the Zero side racks into a narrower form for his blue SR.

How do you know it won't work with the Zero rack? At minute 2:10 in this video this guy says it "utilizes the standard monokey latching and opening system" https://youtu.be/w0jiS0N0gco?t=130

Or are you just saying that to get it to have a narrower profile with v35 I would need to modify the Zero rack?

The locking mechanism is monokey, which means it mates using the same pieces of hardware.

However, the shape of the mount (PLX or PLXR instead of just PL) is curved and different. I had trouble finding good images of it, but finally found an illustrated comparison. http://www.givi.ca/en/mounting.php

I have both a Givi 30L monokey top box that I bought 12 years ago and a 37L Givi monokey top box that I bought on sale from my BMW dealer.  Both top boxes fit the Zero rack that I have on my 2014 S perfectly. Givi's monolock system uses a completely different mounting system.  The monolock boxes are heavier, more rugged and have extra features (such as interior and exterior lights and other doodads), but are about twice as expensive as the monokey luggage.
