When you work out the numbers using a 75c $A and add 10% GST, there a $3000 impost there.
This impost is on top of the retail price in USA.
I'd estimate a minimum of 16 bikes per container, 32 if they stacked them two high.
A container out of USA including all local charges should be no more than $4500, so $300 in freight, tops.

What do we get for this 15% Australia Tax?
No stock, no accessories, no service.
What is to stop grey imports?

Some did but as it was the most in demand model they kept it high as there cash cow. I was quoted a price of $23000 for a 2015 SR which i though was a reasonsble price and placed deposit. This is why I don't wanted to be ripped off just because l live in Australia. Did Zero learn nothing about their entry into Australian Market, they killed interest with high pricing and then had to offer rebate at where pricing should have been. I know 2015 year was screwed up with importer pulling the plug and most likely a write off.  I just hope the 2016 model release will be marketed at a fair price on parity with rest of the world.

For about the same price of a SR you can buy a Honda Goldwing , I used Honda because its about same price in Australia and shows on road cost breakdown. prices from manufactures websites, QLD used for On road pricing. Other state may be different. I have added destination charges to US prices.

Australia Price
Honda Goldwing F6B
$27,060 RIDEAWAY

RRP$25,199
Stamp duty$900
CTP$280
Registration and statutory$182
Dealer pre-delivery & inspection$499

US Price
Gold Wing F6B
STARTING AT $20,499*
+ DESTINATION CHARGE: $390.00

Honda F6B $27060 vs $20889 difference $6171
Zero SR.      $26490 vs $15995 difference $10495

$4324 difference. Zero is way over priced.

Here is another example  Honda VFR1200F about same USA price as Zero SR.

Australian Prices
Honda VFR1200F
$18,382 RIDEAWAY

RRP$16,999
Stamp duty$522
CTP$280
Registration and statutory$182
Dealer pre-delivery & inspection$399

USA pricing
VFR1200F
STARTING AT $15,999*
+ DESTINATION CHARGE: $350.00

Honda VFR1200F $18382 vs $16349 difference $2033
Zero SR                  $26490 vs $15995 difference $10495

$8462 difference , Zero price is way over priced.!!!!

Suzuki Vstrom 1000 ABS is about difference of $1400

Zero price is way over priced.!!!!

You can have a Fonzarelli Electric Scooter for $4500.
3kW motor instead of a 40kW.
50km range instead of 150km.
0-60kmh in 6 seconds instead of 0 - 100kmh.
It'll get yer bum on an electric bike, but :D

Firepower I know it sucks to pay higher prices, but the previous importer didn't make enough money on Zero bikes to stay in the game. The sale numbers are small so they need to make a bigger margin on each bike.
If more numbers were sold then the price could be lower, but even with lower prices Aussies are not yet ready to go electric. Most Aussies have no idea about electric vehicles and believe the ICE manufacturers that range is a really big issue. We have a government interested in helping big business keep their profits high, with no thought for the future.
Until this changes (change of leader or government) we have an uphill battle to promote EV's.
now that the exchange rate is at 73 cents (so maybe you can actuely get 71 cents), do the math and the importer is making nothing on each bikes.

Range is a bit of an issue.
Last weekend I did a fun ride with some friends, over 400kms.

And it doesn't help that there is not a dealer in our largest city. Ok Gosford is not a huge distance, but it's enough that you would want a full charge to get there from some parts of Sydney.

I think they need a major dealer in Sydney to get onboard to really give them a push.

The biggest issue is not range but recharge time. The 1300W ( 8 hour charge) stock charger sux maxxor - I've now got 3600W (2.5 hour charge)  but it's still not enough and will soon have 6kW.
Finding a plug isn't too hard, think bbq areas and caravan parks.
The Oz price is ridiculous, $27k for an SR - really?
An SR is not a superbike and it has lots of compromises in handling, comfort and useability.
While we have idiots in charge and a plunging $A its not going to get any better.
Either shit or get off the pot.

And they are asking $AU34Kfor SR in Thailand. Don't think they sell many at that price either.

BMW S1000R seems to be $21k AUD ride-away price. Oddly it's hard to get a manufacturer specific number nailed down.

Zero is $26,490 AUD for the SR, $31,280 AUD for the SR power tank. 26% and 49% higher than the BMW.

In the US, prices are $13260 USD for BMW S1000R. Zero SR is $15995 USD or $18490 with power tank; 21% and 39% higher than the S1000R.

Zero's pricing seems a little higher in Australia, relatively speaking. But you can't simply compare Zero's pricing in Australia to their US pricing without losing context.

It is impossible to find a BMW motorcycle in the U.S. at the base list price.  Every one is sent over here loaded with expensive options.  I just bought a new BMW R1200RS and it was almost exactly the same price as my 2014 S with PT.  I was at my BMW dealer on Saturday and noticed that the price of a 2015 R1200GS on their showroom floor was $21,500, before taxes and fees. (Talk about an expensive drop in the woods.) It looks to me like many motorcycle model prices are rapidly heading toward Zero prices.  So maybe Zero will not have to drop their prices all that much to become competitive with IC models.  ::)
