Aluminum Air Battery - Latest fad to get press
« on: April 07, 2015, 08:36:31 PM »

Here is the dirt straight from Stanford.  Very long cycle life, super fast charging, bendable, still in the lab (ie - not getting my hopes up).

"We think that it has a bright future."

What is interesting is this story had incredible mainstream media coverage. Even my small local radio station was running the story on every news bulletin.

I heard the same report on my news radio station yesterday.  I also heard that power density, manufacturing processes, cost and other "little details" still need to be resolved before the new battery could be introduced into the market.  I guess you could say that about every new laboratory battery announcement that has come out over the past 10 years or so. As usual, I won't hold my breath until the Al Air battery hits the marketplace in a quantity and at a price that makes it useful for commercial products.

The reason lithium is such a good choice is it is the lightest and most reactive metal. #3 on the periodic table.  That why it has the highest energy density.
a lot of the material in a lithium battery is there to control the reaction in a safe manner.

I guess thats why AL batteries look like they might beat out Li batteries. I'm really not that fussed as to what type of battery powers my bike, as long as it works... ;)

Amusingly I also heard this story on the radio, which happened to be playing in the dealership as I picked up my Zero-S... *lol*
