European EV sales numbers
« on: January 21, 2015, 09:29:21 PM »

Here is a link to an interesting article regarding electric motorcycle and scooter sales in France and a few other European countries.  It looks like the BMW C-Evolution scooter is selling very well, while other brands, including Brammo and Zero, not so much:

What that says to me is that BMW knows how to sell EVs (especially in France) and the other manufacturers do not.  I think it also says something about the advantage of having an existing sales and distribution network, loyal customers that trust your product even if it is completely new to them and confidence that the brand will support their purchase with parts, accessories and service after the sale.   :)

I couldn't agree with the second paragraph more, bmw had a structured system but even more so look at the third place runner up the ktm they also have the dealership and networks why they have sold so much when the bike is "weaker" than a 2012 zero MX; a comparison I was given by someone who had ridden both and probably almost every other electric bike out.
Impressive that they have sold so many when a direct better bike (the fx) only has 2 sales in France.

I beleive it was what the Zero xu was made for that market, the "scooter" lower bike market. I find it quite interesting because I loved the xu the time I rode it, yes I'm a speed fanatic so I wanted more, but I still has the ear to ear grin flooring it at every stoplight to stoplight

I would love to see zero start selling more bikes, but I think it will take a large manufacture like bmw to light a fire under zeros ass or they will fall behind.

Zero is a pretty established company yes they aren't public and raking in the money but they are so far ahead of most that would get into the battery industry that they have already delt with the recalls the battery issues that other companies will have to deal with. Zero is making what they want though ( which I love and I think it's the right idea for the electric bike market) but bmw is going after what sells. Which will jump them into the industry much faster than the approach lets say Harley is taking.

Thanks Richard for posting this most interesting find.

The article starts off with, "We don’t know how many electric bikes were sold in the US for 2014, but we now have the sales numbers for France."
I understand that private companies in the USA don't have to report sales figures and numbers of units sold which relates to the first part of the statement.
Wondering how the sales numbers for France and the Netherlands are available...do these European nations require this information from the manufacturers and/or dealers and then make that information public.

I find the numbers that are given for France and the Netherlands to be indicative to the greater market, and agree with the summary at the bottom of the article, that we're still just in the very early market stage of the electric motos & scoots.  It's hard to imagine that these levels of sales can sustain the number of manufacturers in this industry.  BMW and Zero are bringing in income, but manufacturers such as KTM and the other ones listed would seem to be losing money or working for free hoping for financial returns in the future.

In the Netherlands the sales of electric motorcycles increased 300% between 2013 and 2014. Zero's sales increased 160% between 2013 and 2014.
But there are still less than 200 electric motorcycles in total on the road in the Netherlands at the end of 2014.
This means much more room for growth left!
Most sales in 2015 will go to Zero and BMW I think. The Brammo situation will hurt their sales (can they even deliver?).

Interesting newcomers to watch:
Energica
Tacita
Lito Sora
Bultaco
EVoke
Electric Motion (trial bike)
Johammer
Looking forward to seeing these brands appear in the Netherlands sales numbers for 2015!
