is the battery chemistry for 2012, 13 & 2014 the same?
zero's web site is pretty vague just stating that they are all li ion batteries.

I know the 2009 to 2011 used the same molicel batteries from Canada.

what is the next new big thing in battery technology and when might this be available in zero bikes?

Being an early adopter is tough. Why buy today's technology if a year or two down the road a new battery will go twice as far and weigh half as much?

2012 used EIG C020 lithium ion pouch cells, chemistry NMC.

2013-2014 uses Farasis lithium ion pouch cells, also NMC. They're a little denser than the EIG cells, and reportedly work a little better in cold temperatures.

Both lithium sulfur and lithium/zinc air chemistries have some promise for improving energy density. I think the energy density currently available is not a limitation .. but instead the big barriers to EV adoption are total cost of producing the EV powertrain, low volume production, limited distribution and support networks, and limited DC fast-charging capabilities.

As for early adoption.. it's a little like buying a computer. You have go to into the purchase knowing that the next version will be substantially improved. Buy when the product available meets your needs at a price which is exceeded by its value to you.

From what I've read about recent lithium sulfur developments it not only has the potential to increase energy density but also to reduce cost of production. I hope it works out that way for us. Right now, the big disadvantage is rapid deterioration with charge/discharge cycles. Recent work using carbon nanotechnology to solve that problem looks promising.

Check out CDI, listed on the link above.

They say to contact for a quote.

I would expect the pouch cells to cost $60-70 in small quantities.. likely to not be inexpensive.

i found this chinese place on alibaba
now I have to convert mm to inches and see if the a123 batteries are more energy dense then the leaf ones?
nice thing about these packs is that they come with a bms/charger

Check the output restrictions. 20Ah cells with 40A max output is going to significantly restrict total battery power output. 16s1p pack is limited to approximately 2 kW output, or < 3 hp.
