Quantya vs Zero Weight And It's Affect On Performance
« on: May 16, 2009, 11:22:03 PM »

On the Dirt Rider Forum Quantya thread I asked...

Quote
2) Congrats on your 1, 2 finish in Mini Moto SX.  Many thought Zero riders would win because on paper the Zero X has more power.  What qualities of the Quantya bike helped pull off the 1, 2 podiums?  How much was the bike, how much was the rider skill?  I apologize for not being more knowledgeable of the riders in the event.

Answer:
We had a lot of fun at the first head to head electric motorcycle race.  I think it might have been 50/50 on bike and rider at this one. Zero had a current AMA pro Ryan Dudek and that proved it was not the rider. He ended up having a mechanical failure. But he was not up front from the get go! I think our bikes are more suited for this track than the Zero was. Our components are motorcycle components which are more heavy duty than Mountain bike components that Zero runs.  I think that has been proven in the pit bike market when they first tried to adapt mountain bike components to pit bikes. They quickly figured out they can’t handle the strain.  So I feel it was 50/50 of this one.

He later came back with another response which I think was interesting...

One thing I wanted to point out from a previous post was our bike rights now as they stand are heavier than the Zero by at least 50lbs! And we still managed to beat them in a heads up race at Mini Moto Sx. Yes if you believe everything on paper they had us beat! They are lighter! But they paid a price for their light components! They can’t handle too much abuse. We build our bike to handle abuse and still can perform.
In order for them to handle what our bike do they have to add weight! Heavier Motorcycle components! We on the other hand can always shave weight. Our frames, Swing arm, and sub frame are all built from steel to bring the cost down on the bikes just like the Japanese brands did for so many years. No until the past ten or so years did they start making aluminum frames to save weight. That said as the bikes move forward we can always add a aluminum sub frame or swing arm to shave weight. So we have room to move. Zero can only add weight at this point.
Thank you,
David Lodermeier
