50 mph electric bicycle video
« on: August 15, 2013, 04:49:55 AM »

Here is an article, with a video, about a fellow who built an electric bicycle with two hub motors and a 72V Li battery pack that he carries in a backpack.  Range is said to be 37 miles and top speed is about 50 mph.  The video shows him riding the bike along  the Mulholland highway.

It is great, but not impressive since it is now teh average DIY high power electric biccyle speed . and these kit can be bought on ebay. what is impressive is when you understand 100% of your components and can tweak them to their limit. that's what i like to do ;D

50mph have been acheived in 2006 by a guy on E-S called Lowell on Endless-sphere.

57Mph have been acheived in 2009 by a guy called Doctorbass :)

70Mph have been acheived  in 2012 by a guy called Doctorbass  ;)    http://evalbum.com/3406

On all these 3 speed, only one hub motor is enough.

Personally i have demonstrated that it is possible to tow a 19200 pounds schoolbus with an electric bicycle with hub motor and the same bicycle can do 47mph and 210km range using the 432 cells of various dissassembled Makita packs 8)  http://evalbum.com/1947

Well, my son-in-law had a hub motor mountain bike that would hit 35 mph and weighed 100 pounds using saddlebag-filled NiCad batteries.  After a couple of years riding it occasionally, he took the motor off and sold it, replacing it with a 300 watt hub motor and Li-ion batteries.  He decided that riding a 35 mph bicycle on the street, with bicycle-type brakes, was too dangerous and (when it ran out of juice) pedaling the bike up hill was too stressful.  At least this version he can pedal, instead of push, home when the power runs out.  ::)

Attached is a photo of the new and improved neutered version of his e-bike.   :o

Yeah, I have around 5000 miles on my ebike and while it's capable of going faster than 30, I keep it limited to about 30mpg, because, even with very strong brakes, I don't feel comfortable at much faster on that chassis, for any length of time anyway. It's still an incredible efficient and practical vehicle though!
