Insurance for my 2013 zero fx
« on: June 24, 2013, 10:36:45 PM »

Any suggestions on insurance, I am using progressive but it's like $800 a year that really high.
They didn't have my bike in there computer. So I want to change it. Seems like a lot of insurance companies don't know zero bikes.

I had Dairyland and changed to Progressive because Dairyland won't underwrite an electric bike. I got my rate through USAA. Have you checked with Geico?

I have Progressive Insurance for my 2012 S and am only paying $32 a year for $250K/500K liability-only insurance.  I self-insure my bikes for collision, theft and comprehensive insurance and save a lot of money that way - especially as I have only had one accident during over 50 years of riding.

Progressive asked me how many ccs the bike was too, but finally must have found something from the vin #. I also have only liability which is very inexpensive for an old guy with a good driving/riding record and several bikes. The 2013 Zero S cost me an additional $18 a year. If it were my only bike, looks like it would be $76 a year...again liability only for an older rider with most if not all their applicable discounts including  USAA insured cars which gives you an additonal discount because USAA referred me since they do not insure motorcycles. If you are young, have a bank loan and thus need collision and comprehensive, the cost is going to be much higher, and it might pay to shop around. Often you can find a company that gives you an introductory rate and you can use that info to negotiate with other insurance companies. I'm sure they don't call it negotiating, but somehow they manage to come up with some unknown-to-you discount they failed to ask about with the first quote to get/keep your business. One problem is if you already have insurance from one company, then find another company, the first company charges you to cancel your insurance since it is something like breaking a lease on an appt where the rate is based on 6 mo. or 1 year. The cancellation fees might be more than the savings with the cheaper company.

$800 seems a lot. I pay $284 for 3 bikes with only the new Zero full covered. Also Progressive.
Biggest component for me is Uninsured Motorist @ $48 for 250K/500K.  My liability $20, Comprehensive $15 ($250 deduct.)  Collision $38 ($250) for a total of $131. My '92 CB750 for $78,  01 Kawa 125 $75.
