Don't think the bikes are at dealers yet - Monterey is a good distance away from LA. This was probably from the dealer meeting where they showed off the 2013 bikes.

Zero FX motor makes 70 ft-lb torque, 275 lb weight, 85 mph gearing.

Zero S motor makes 68 ft-lb torque, 350 lb weight, 95 mph gearing.

Figure 180 pound rider.. similar wheel torque for the S means 68 * (530/455) * (95/85) = 88 ft-lb torque at the motor.

If you want to wheelie on the S you'll probably need a size 6 controller.. that'll give you about 80 hp peak, if the motor can handle it.

Edit: Hollywood Electrics says the S can wheelie if you move the rider weight to the rear.

Zero specifically designed the S chassis with a slightly longer swing arm to limit the chance of wheelying and prevent them getting sued

That's an interesting theory, but I think they most likely engineered the geometry of the frame for performance and handling.

I asked Zero to extend the wheelbase so that I could carry more stuff on the bike.

I'm pleased to read here that the CG is a little further back on the FX. That, along with its greater rake and trail, will make it handle deep sand even better. My 2012 DS is noticeably better in soft sand than my 2010 DS due mostly, I think, to its greater rake and trail.

The thing I am concerned about, for myself, is that having grown accustomed to the throttle response of my DS, that in a situation where I need sudden acceleration (frequently in desert riding) that I will over-react on the FX and end up on my (about to be 78 year old) back. On the other hand there have been times that I wished I had quicker response on my DS.

I'll probably start out riding my new FX in Eco mode where the acceleration rate will be slower and get used to the bike before going Sport mode.
