J1772 Pricing
« on: December 04, 2012, 04:59:37 AM »

I have been reading up on the web but there are so many varying types of J1772 im not sure exactly what the Zero adaptor does, because it looks to me like they have a soldered an IEC plug to a fancy socket and slapped a $500 price tag on it.

I charge outside so i want something better than the stupidly located IEC socket.  For the time being im going to make up an adaptor lead with an inline bulgin 3 pin plug/socket but it means leaving the socket hanging out of a fairing panel somewhere.  Where does the Zero 1772 adaptor mount to the bike?  The lead looks short so it must be close to the charger.

I saw a facebook image linked some time ago that showed a 2011 Zero plugged into J1772, but the image appears to have disappeared from the internet. It showed the J1772 plug mounted on the lower right side of the bike. Looking at the cable on Zero's site, it appears to be too short to plug into this location on the 2012 Zeros.

Here's where I first saw the photo:

Here's the photo URL:

See attached a copy taken from Google's cache.

$500 is pretty steep, but it may be worth it for the ease of install. DIY may be interested in this J1772 inlet on ebay, $155 including 12" cable and J1772 pilot signal driver module. Note that the pilot signal module requires 12V power.. not sure whether that is available when the Zero bike is switched off. Then you have to figure out a way to mount it cleanly to the bike.. Terry @ offthegrid mounted his to the tail at one point, but I believe he has it mounted in a different location now.

Edit: Here's another source for a "UL approval pending" J1772 inlet @ $110, no pilot signal.

Then the plug is an extra $170 on top.  Think i will stick with a Bulgin or something else that is suitable.  Seems like a licence to print money to me.   How much are OEMs paying to use 1772 because with an open standard it would knock hundreds off the price.
