2012 extra battery for zero x / mx
« on: February 25, 2012, 03:17:02 AM »

i want to get an extra battery for my 2012 x. does anyone know when i will be able to order it? also, what it will cost?

also, i wanted to know if it would be stupid to carry the extra battery on the bike for those days that i need to commute more than 25 miles (the limit of my battery based on just a few days of riding so far)? and if i did carry it is there a side bag/box that would work?

thanks.

A lockable tail box might work. Keep in mind that you'll be carrying a $2-3k piece of equipment with you.

Zero has the 2010 X battery listed on their website for $3000 including an extra offboard charger. This was used btw to make the 2010-2011 bikes eligible for the 10% federal EV credit (now expired). The 2012 battery is probably similar in price (despite having an extra 50% capacity).

If you don't have easy access to a charging spot at work, you might bring the battery inside to charge. It should be pretty fast to remove, and an extra offboard charger would be much less expensive ($500-600) than an extra battery. A 50% charge should only take about 80 minutes.

protomech --> thanks. that's good advice. i will wait, obviously, until they announce the battery.

would it be stupid of me to travel with the stock charger? does anyone think that moving it around all the time would cause it to possibly stop functioning? i could almost always find a plug somewhere in an emergency.

i really wish zero could have built it into the dirt-bikes...

If the stock charger is the same as the ones built into the street Zeros, then hauling it around shouldn't be a problem. After all, the stock charger sits at the bottom of the bike (at least it does on my 2012 S) and is exposed to water, dirt and road vibration. Packing a loose charger around would likely result in a more friendly environment and less potential for damage - assuming that it wasn't dropped off the seat and on to a hard surface.   :)

Gadget123,

We can get you the parts to mount the charger on the lower front of the bike, just like on the XU.

My Zero X is street legal and i just throw the charger in a back pack. I thought about mounting it on the bike but it didnt like the way it looked. Also there are times when i dont need the charger on the bike.
