KTM Freeride E tested in Motorcyclist magazine

Check out the new March issue of Motorcyclist magazine when you pass by the newsstand.  On page 52 and 53 there is a two-page review of the KTM Freedride E.  They give it four stars out of five and call it "the most promising e-crosser yet!"   :)

The article says that KTM expects to have the Freeride E in European showrooms by the end of 2012 at a price equivalent to $13,000 USD.

They also say that it will be another year before KTM comes to the U.S. and when it does, it will be accompanied by a street-legal version and a "supermoto-style E-Duke".

I hope 2.1KWh battery was an early idea that they replaced with something larger.  Zero increased theirs to 2.6-3.0.   I guess just enough to run a 40 min moto was their plan.  Seems like a small market to not include trail riders.  I hope that works out for them.  I guess for a back yard rider 40 minutes is probably enough as well.  KTM sure knows how to make a nice looking bike anyway.  I look forward to seeing more of this thing in action.  The Freeride 350 is a trail bike.  Maybe they don't think they can get the range for an electric trail bike with current battery technology.  A leap in battery technology would be a wonderful thing right about now.

it seems for now all the real innovation is coming from specialist companies like Zero to advance electric motorbikes. KTM might throw a couple of engineers to toy with it - reminds me like Kodak did with digital cameras ... and we all know what happened.

I think KTM will do well with the E bike as they will have the suspension that Zero lack plus they will have recognised brand behind them and a ready made dealership network to roll out into...
