sudden loss of power
« on: May 01, 2011, 05:43:24 PM »

Had as well some "power outs". The first one going 80km/h, dark 3 lane fast road and rainy/wet. suddenly the bike started loosing power, warning light was not coming on, so did not hit the kill switch or stand out. The two bikes just behind me (petrol of cause) now caught up and overtook ... then at around 50km/h and me thinking how to push my way back home the motor cuts in again. By that time I was happy that the electrics worked and I had the indicator on to warn the faster traffic. The fan was not running either - so bike not necessarily to hot.

Next day, going in stop and go traffic and suddenly total power loss. I pull the main switch. Wait a couple of seconds, push back in and then no problem to ride on. This is scary as every thing went dark, no lights, no indicators. For this one needs some separate bicycle lights ...

Now -- lets see how the next days go.
Anyone had this ? Or is it some days of wet Australian autumn  weather doing this ?

Yours is a 2010 Zero S?  Are you sure you have the main power connect fully engaged?  That red switch should require quite a bit of force to engage it.

thx Harlan, yes 2010 S, I suspect the second "outage" could be contributed to the main power switch as all power went including lights etc. I then pushed it down and up firmly and all was fine again.
the first problem in which the lights stayed on is more confusing -- unless the motor was getting to hot and it was throttled down ?? had been riding quite "sporty" and "racing" the petrol bikes. So it really sucked when then ended up pulling past me ....

Update -
I had it happen this morning twice. suddenly loss of engine. This time on both occasions the red warning light was indeed coming on. first time just after a couple of miles then coasting downhill - as I tried to accelerate the warning light started flashing and no power on the motor. I hit the kill switch that seemed to reset it and I could accelerate again. then a little later at a red traffic light. red warning light comes on, no power to motor. i reset with key power cycle.
overall slow riding motor not hot. so still going into warning. no beeping or so ...

anyone had this ?

I received a 2011 DS last week, and just had a similar situation this morning--my fifth commute to work.  Moving along about 45 mph, all the lights went out except for the red exclamation mark inside the triangle.  Pulled off the road, cycled the key-switch off-and-on, bike booted and took off.  No problems the rest of the way to work, or on the commute home.

I noticed when I arrived at home that when I hit the kill switch, the same red exclamation point/triangle comes on.  I was thinking maybe I didn't have the kill-switch properly set this morning.  I hope that's all it was.  Other than that incident, bike operates great!

update 2

all been fine again. no warning lights or power cuts. bike just running fine. In fact seems I get one bar more of power left when I return from my commute.
I have 5 bars out of 11 left for a 30km / 19miles commute. Up and downhill, couple of faster stretches and a bit of slow going. Luckily we have the transit lane that allows bikes/taxis/buses to bypass the cages that are in slow stop and go traffic.

Just bought a 09 Zero X from a guy on Monday.  Went out for my first ride of any particular length this morning and with the power indicator in the yellow (3 left) the bike cuts out and the green led starts blinking.  Later on after (multiple times) powering down and back up with the key and getting a small burst of acceleration before it cuts out again I notice a beeping sound.  I get a ride home from a friendly passer by in his pick up truck fortunately.  I plugged the bike in to charge hoping its just low on power and the indicator is inaccurate.  After plugging it in (key off) I get the same beeping sound.  I emailed Zero to see what they have to say, so stay tuned!

I've had one instance of power loss. I was riding my DS on a desert paved road at about 50mph when the motor quit and I was coasting. I saw the red light blinking but I couldn't tell how many flashes per group. I had only been riding a couple of minutes on a cool day so I know it wasn't motor heat. Since then I've ridden it in much hotter weather with no problem. Before I coasted to a stop the power came back on and it hasn't happened again since.

My master power switch doesn't actually click into place so I can only pull up on it firmly to ensure it is closed. I always worry that on rough dirt it will drop down since it doesn't have any detente to hold it up, but so far that hasn't happened. It may have been making poor contact but I'll never know in that instance.
