What to do with old battery?
« on: November 18, 2010, 09:32:23 AM »

I replaced the original battery from my 2009 Zero X with a new one this past July.  Long story :-[...........anyway the old battery has been
sitting around my basement for a few weeks and I was trying to decide what to do with it?  Zero said to just recycle it,  can anything
be done to refurbish it?  The voltage is so low the charger can't charge it and reads a fault code.
It does make a good door stop though! ;D    any ideas???

Open it up and try and bump charge the low cells. You can buy replacement cells. so you can rebuild it and learn a little at the same time. I'll buy it please dont trash it. Zero is lame for not doing a little trade in / exchange still good parts in it.

Do you have any information on who makes it for Zero or links on how to recharge it?

Zero makes the pack but the cells are made by E-one, Moli. You will need a way to drain down the cells and also charge them back up. CBA III could be used to drain or you can setup you own power dump with light bulbs. I'd guess you will want to charge in groups. The real problem will be dealing with the hotglue Zero uses to build the packs. You can post in the batt section of endless sphere for more help. If Zero does not end up repairing my pack I will be rebuilding mine.

Here is a link to a guy with some for sale http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20385

Thanks.......for the info.  I got curious and popped the side covers off  my battery,  it appears to be a moli (made in Canada).
You aren't kidding about the glue in that battery.  They don't appear to be designed for any servicing work period.  Getting to  all  the cells  involves major work and could lead to damaging the components in there.  I will give moli a call and see what they say about  parts or refurbish options.
If I decide to give up,  you can have it.    I think you are more motivated then me with this ;D and could  lead to some interesting posts here.

Thanks Pennjon

I've always read that if a lithium battery is discharged below a certain cell voltage it will be destroyed. That is why there is always an automatic cutoff of the load.

moli wont help you it only sells the cells to company's and its selective at that.  Your only option is to take the pack apart. I posted pictures in the forum of the zero pack I have. Will you please take pics of your pack. I can tell you how to bump charge and read voltage of the pack. You might not need to take the whole pack apart just unbolting the cell groups you might be-able to bump up and hook back up to the factory charger.

Well,  I see how the individual batteries are series together.   It seems they could be easily designed to come apart for servicing and replacement.
How dangerous are they to work with and why no factory certified expert to rebuild your pack?
Is the market too small and specialized?    I know about the liability stuff.......but , hey auto parts stores will sell you brakes for car.
They aren't responsible if you put them on wrong and can't stop then crash into something, Right.
Drug Companies sell drugs that kill/hurt people ...... Why can't E-moli sell to the people?   ........AHH a Canadian Company with a conscience
