Nissan Leaf US Battery Plant announced
« on: May 28, 2010, 04:18:25 AM »

In today's newspaper was an article by Bill Poovey of the AP reporting that Nissan NA broke ground yesterday for a Li-ion battery plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. The plant is expected to create 1,300 jobs and is described as a "no-risk venture" by Nissan's CEO, Carlos Ghosn. The battery plant is part of a 1.7 Billion dollar investment to start production of the Leaf in 2012. Most of the investment comes from a federal loan aimed at fostering energy independence. The battery plant will be 1.3 million square feet in area. The $1.4 billion federal loan is part of a $25 billion dollar 'Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program' authorized by Congress as part of the "Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007". The plant is expected to open in 2012.
