No More Regen - Flashing Red Lights on Dash
« on: September 18, 2024, 06:50:42 AM »

The other day when I let off of the throttle on my ‘21 Ribelle I had a little heart attack when the bike did NOT slow down. I grabbed the friction brakes just in time, but… what happened?

I tried switching from the high to medium to low regen settings (and all the way off and back on), but the regen is no longer working at all.

Now when I release the throttle, instead of braking, two red lights start flashing on the dash (the two highest and most central - where you usually see the dash light up under heavy acceleration).

I tried the usual; turning the bike off/on and rebooting the bike without any luck.

Anyone else experience this? Looks like I might be bringing it back to the shop….

Also - got these error messages, which seem unrelated to regen (Left and Right Indicator Short Circuit Fault - oh, and the turn signals are working fine).

Did you try a VCM reset?

The way I do it is to turn the bike on,  press BOTH "set" buttons (including the one behind the left grip)and the mode button all in at the same time for around five seconds and it will be obvious when the VCM reboots.

Sorry to hear that.

The error codes B1005 and B1007 are for Left resp. Right idicator short circuit fault, so apparently totally unrelated. Are your indicators working alright? Might hint to a loose connector or moisture ingress.

The red lights on top of display are the indicators for the electrical anti-blocking system eABS.

Quote from the manual: The eABS prevents the rear wheel from losing its grip of the road when the accelerator is released with the simultaneous intervention of the battery regeneration system, which simulates the engine's braking effect. The eABS System does not act upon the braking system, but temporarily deactivates the battery regeneration system until the tire has regained a perfect grip of the road's surface. The intervention of the wheel's anti-blocking system is indicated by the activation of the last three red LED indicators to the right and left of the motor power indicator.

Therefore thats system should somehow work together with the ABS sensors, so checking the ABS sensors at both wheels might be worthwile. Optics clean? Cabling OK?

And is the ABS warning on when you ride?

I had to replace the front ABS sensor on my DS. I compared the resistance with the rear sensor. The front sensor was open, and the rear (the good one) measured 50K ohms. But this was on a Zero.

Yes, that’s what I meant by ‘re-booting’ the bike.
Optics clean? Cabling OK?
I will check when I get home (out of town presently).

Thanks for the suggestions!

Because you only have the closing half.
is the end marker. You have to preface it with [*quote] first (without the asterisk) somewhere.

The red lights flashing means some type of control measure is taking control of your bike.  abs, traction control etc.

If your charge is above 95 percent the bike wont regen.
If there is crap on the wheel sensor for speed, that can cause issues as well.  given the lights are flashing tells me it is having a problem sensing your wheel speed.
Check both sensors, make sure they are tight, aligned, and there is not crap on them, like metal fragments or just grunge from the road.  Check the wires, wiggle things a bit and make sure the wiring is intact.

The blinker lights might be an indication.  There might be a short in the light, this normally happens when you have a cracked lens and water manages to get in there and cause some problems, or they get bent one too many times.  The light can be working fine BUT there is still a problem.  I have seen this where the problem only happens momentarily, ie something loose  just taps the side or just for a moment breaks contact, and it's enough to throw the fault, (which will then lock the bike in that fault mode until it's reset / ie turned off then back on).

If it IS a short circuit that is causing that, that could also bring the voltage on the rail down enough where the ABS, which also works off 12 volts sees a bad power situation and goes into safe mode / shuts down etc itself, and no longer works correctly.  You may or may not see that cascading fault.

Any electrical fault on the 12 volt grid can affect EVERYTHING that runs off 12 volts.  If that something is some sort of electronic device, and not just a simple resistive load like a light bulb, then that glitch can cause problems with them

Id look into the lights, make sure they are tight.  The bulbs are tight, and check the connectors on them, unfortunately I find that the connectors are prone to working themselves loose and the boards on IN the lights are not the best quality and can be damaged easily.  Luckily replacement lights are fairly cheap.

Since the light fault is persistent,  persue it.  correcting it might fix the other issue, but check the wires /tightness of the sensor, and the sensor head itself for damage, foreign debris, and proper alignment.

Let us know what you find.
